I dont like dogs

We have a scale in the treats given, from ordinary kibble to...not quite caviar, but the dog equivalent. Dogs can also appreciate differences in quantity. A slow recall gets an ordinary reward, a fast, immediate recall gets a higher value reward or a larger one and the rewards become intermittent until treats can be dispensed with altogether as training progresses. The uncertainty seems to make some dogs work much harder while it may discourage others but indiscriminate feeding of treats is certainly not the right way to motivate a dog. And many dogs will not work for food rewards anyway but will for a game. Some exceptional ones will work for just praise but I have not yet found a lurcher who will.

Oh I absolutely get you.

But what you're talking about is far and away from a pet dog training class where people are paying money to be told to shovel hot dogs into their already-fully fed dogs, in a relatively sterile environment, in reward for very little effort whatsoever.

I see loads, like genuinely plenty. There’s very few I can’t see the appeal in! That said I don’t want to be jumped on by rude dogs but I just blame the humans for any of that! My list for breeds I want to own is almost the whole book...! (And crosses...!)

I do kind of wonder how you end up with your own dog(s) if you don't like anyone else's.

I spent my childhood borrowing other people's dogs, I'm 36 and still borrowing other people's dogs when I get the opportunity :D.

Me too. I was obsessed. All the neighbours loved me as I would walk their dogs for free.

I don’t get everyone’s absolute obsession with treats, whether they are dog owners or not! Even my vet was giving my dogs treats this week, mainly because George was a good boy and didn’t bite her 😂

I don’t give my dogs treats. There is no reason to give dogs treats. I don’t want anyone else to give my dogs treats. So why does everyone insist on doing so?

And before someone points out that I’m a miserable sod, yes absolutely I am and I don’t actually care lol 😂 My dogs are healthy well balanced and reasonably obedient (apart from Millie chasing deer!) and treats ain’t gonna change that 😄

You miserable sod! 😜

Kindred spirits 😀. I love dogs! I don’t pet other people’s unless it’s appropriate but I just love everything about dogs and not sure I’ve ever met a dog I don’t like, plenty of people tho!

Me too. I was the annoyingly persistent kid who knocked on every door in the village asking to walk the resident dog for the pleasure of doing so (I wasn’t allowed one at home).
You sound like you were a useful child ;)

Continuing the theme - me too.😀First dog at 11 years old after six years of persistent whining, demanding and bribery!!

It started with jasper who was a very old JRT who lived a few doors down and I used to get to hold the end of the lead (with an adult on the other bit of lead).

Daisy the springer lived next door who was a with adult dog and never entirely convinced walking with other people but I remember being sooo happy when mum turned up with her to walk to pick us up from brownies one night

Sascha the cairn who lived down the road who everyone took out I have no idea how many walks a day that dog did!

I did lose mum's best friends springer in river mud, she had said I was ok to let her off, tara had different ideas that day.

And then my aunties dogs Aaron the gordon setter and amy and candy belonging to the other aunt - Amy was a GSD and Candy looked like a teddybear, black and tan and I have no idea what her actual breeding might have been even now!

Waiting for retirement when I can hopefully get my own :)
