There have been a lot of horse thefts here recently, mainly by gypsy people coming to ask for metal, ad being told no!!!

Today,, gypsies came to us, asking the metal question? And because I am in bed ill, I noticed that they stopped at my paddock for a scarey time too long.

I normally have a lot of time for travellers I know, but I am now scared :(

What should I do?

Buy a pack of large savage dogs....

Seriously, a friend today was threatend by travellers when she caught them lifting stuff.....she called police, they haven't turned up yet....

What do you do in this day and age?

Nowt, I guess....because it's one law for one, and then a law for them what do wot they want.....

what a horrible position to be in I would feel the same.. round here metal gates from fields have been taken luckily the horses were found having got out through the removed gate, the theives wanted the gate not the horses.

well said

Actually I know of quite a few travellers that won't leave their vehicles if there's collies hanging around, the pack of dogs idea is a good one

Asking for metal..hmm i would be worried. Just had a pair of 700 ornate gates stolen from my garden by scrap metal gypsies.
They ask for scrap metal but if you are not about then they will just take. Fuming!

OMG what a coincedence, in the last week and a half we have had two different sets of different travellers / gypsy's stop by at my parents place where we have our horse lorry parked (we are currently refurbing it hence off the road and my parents have a huge car park) asking for any scrap metal, my father happens to have a very old rusted up lorry so offered them that, both gypsy's offered decent money and said they would come back to collect in a couple of day's.... neither said gypsy's have returned for the old rusted lorry but both parties at the time were interested about our horse lorry and our horsey connections, luckly my husband and I live 3 miles away from my parents where our horses live, we had all wondered how come they never came back for the rusted up lorry THEY offered money for!!!!! VERY SCAREY

At home I have my ACD dog, who has a very loud bark and a large sign on the house wall saying 'Warning, the dog bites'

Seems we are one of the few who have not been robbed in our street...our neighbours love our dog who is outside during the day. She alerts everyone if there is a problem...

However, when the travellers do come round, we have told them before, if we have anything they can take, we will put it outside next to the garage, everyones happy it seems.

As for thefts from the field, someone, don't believe it was travellers.....lifted all our chickens.

The horses?

Our 17.2 would kill anyone that tried to catch him, load him, or hit him....he is nearest the gate.

:D

If HE gets upset, it sets all the others off! They would have a time trying to load up them 'osses, I tell ya!

Keep an eye on groupon theyre doing watchbot cameras that of you can link in to a phone line, to plug in online, you can place the watchbot camera which is wireless in a position to see your gate, you can also check the picture from your phone if its got wifi and your computer, it can be set to record.
Get one of the cctv fake cameras in place asap until then
Cant you bring him in at nights for a week or so ?
what a real worry for you

Thanks all, DS knows how close his stable is to the house!!

A bit to soon to get dogs, geese etc, just hope they noticed how close I am to the stable, and my bedroom window is open !!

Had the day off work due to being so ill, but I hope for once, I will be awake :(

I'm sharing your panic too!!!

I don't like to pass judgement on anybody, but it's got to be far too much of a coincidence that every January + July (when the gypsies turn up in our neck of the woods and park up in the same place for 3 weeks each time) that peoples yards are raided, peoples water troughs/metal baths/gates/rugs/tack are stolen ......

So it's Jan and they're back, went to the yard last week and all of our gates were open and the barn door was closed (We always leave it open) no-one other than me & mum go up there ..... she hadn't left gates open the night before ........ took everything I could fit into my car home and praying they don't come back :(

you want to get some residential gypos to live on your yard door step they never piss on their own door step (well in my experience of them thus far) having grown up 2 miles from a huge ***** camp and now living just down the road from another. Its when they leave you want to nail everything to the ground!

Dragon Slayer, if you seriously have "warning the dog bites" from a legal point of view I would get shot, if you make out that you have a dangerous dog and it does actually bite someone, a) you will probably be taken to court and b) your dog would probably be PTS much better off just having a sign saying "dogs live here" again, a sign of the the pathetic, happy litigious world we live in :) and it would be bound sure to be a gypo that gets bitten and they know the law inside out!

Well, having had our horsebox and daihatsu batteries nicked, the fule syphened off and some fairly expensive jump wings stolen over the last 2 weeks, I am not the biggest fan of these 'travellers' or whatever you wish to term them. I don't understand people who stand up for them to be honest - maybe they've never had that feeling of turning up at your stables in the morning to find gates wide open and doors san through/cut through with acetiline torches to filch your stuff. Of COURSE they never get caught - they are above the law it would seem - p*sses me off the police never touch them. This time there is even a house (new build) that is postioned at the end of our track - they have CCTV cameras that cover the entrance of the track. This does not seem to have deterred the thieves although we are yet to see whether anything was picked up on the CCTV. Make sure you lock everything and remove anything of great value from your yard. Also try and changeyour routine a bit so they are never quite sure when someone's going to be about.

Had similar paranoia this week, house/yard sitting for a friends livery/stud yard 23 horses and all associated bumf, another friend tells me a couple of yards have recently been broken into etc. I have ended up parking my car in front of that gate onto the yard which probably won't make any difference but makes me feel better and means they can't just back a van in :(

It's their human rights to do what they like when they like and stuff everyone else.

Yep that's about right!

I'd quite like my jump wings back :( If anyone sees two bright pink polyjump moulded wings with various teeth marks on up for sale, they're mine!!! :)

I met a family of proper Romany gypsies once and they were lovely people. They left no mess, they made no noise they didn't steal, they didn't gather in large groups. They made turned wooden articles which they sold. Rarer than hens teeth these days though - it just the rubbish we see on the TV.
And so many defend them........until they move into theoir neighbourhood and if you give a hoot about animals, the countryside, humanity your eyes open!

We get the usual know on the door and 'your tree is diseased mate,...needs to come down. We'll do it for £100 and take it away' .... and release the puppy dog (7.5 stone solid muscel shepherd) 'My dog can get to the end of the road in 3seconds,.....can you?!' gypsies are scared of dogs, they hate them (their pets ones are for rabbiting and live outsoors, never go in the stolen caravans). Dog or shotgun (although shouldnt say that,....that famrer a few years ago should have got a medal rather than prison sentance).
At our yard we have 2 large metal things that come out the ground. People at the yard know where the key is, but no-one else, so the gypsies cant get in and steal horses or trailers. They also have a massive rotty who even I am terrified of....along with the collie dogs but they are just sheep herders.

Police are useless when it comes to gypsies - they are not traceable by address (obviously) or also name (as they have about 3 each). Police also wont go into our local caravan park for their own safety. They wonder why people hate them?! I dont care if someone lives in a caravan, I DO care when they lie, steal, fight and are so so cruel to their horses and live stock. My opinion in a country wide cull

Yes Gypsies real romany ones are very nice folk. sadly we have travelers
which years ago would have been labled vagabonds and treated as such by the law and
not indulged with all sorts of help and allowed to ride roughshod over everyone else!!!
I think it could be proved a lot have chosen a certain lifestyle its sad that scum can latch on to a ethinc label and do as they likey the nasty ******....

I was advised by a DCI (not the top man! Doh!) that my sign was stating what would happen if they came on my property. Saying that rather than warning of a dog, shows it in black and white what WILL happen, therefore I have covered my own arse if they got bitten.

The sign stays.

Some of my friends have dropped the Romany now the council force them to live in houses and call themselves Travellers. It's almost like they're ashamed to be stuck in bricks and motor :(

If it helps, a member of the same family was recently arrested AND locked up for stealing his own sisters car... So apparently they're not always above the law ;) ;)

As for keeping Gypsies on site... It has always worked for me, lived next to a camp and then kept Dorey next to a scrap metal yard for a year. Unfortunately, the scrap metal yard was raised... twice... (they ignore our stuff though, so maybe fortunately....)

Problem is, there's scum in all sectors. Was watching on TV how zoos are on high alert to protect the rhinos and elephants from poachers. Pretty sure gypsies aren't to blame for that, and it's pretty damn scummy... My old scrap metal collecter was a bit of a rough diamond and they knew about the sink hidden in the garden (weirdos!) but they never stole a thing!

Generalisations are more dangerous than your stereotypical gypsies...

Do you mean bricks and mortar, or are they genuinely ashamed to be stuck in their vans?

Didn't think it'd be long before you made an appearance ;)

Yep, My late FIL used to say that the only thing a gypsie respects is a nasty dog. They wouldn't get out of their cars when they pulled up in his yard!

OP, get yourself some big barky dogs and whatever you do, be polite to them.

They don't have a van between them!!

Some of the gypsies the council moved down from salisbury bought vans with them... Apparently the only people who hate gypsies more than HHOers is other gypsies...
