Words can not describe how livid I am. Owner of my field is getting some work done on his driveway. Contractors have been today and have opened the field gate, driven their tractor in (leaving gate open) while they dump some rubble in the corner.

I wasn't told the contractors needed access to the field or I would have moved the horses. As it is the horses have been going balistic, they have broken through the fences and due to the fact the field gate and drive gate were open they could have potentially got out onto the road.

Luckily OH is off work today and has gone down to check the horses are OK, but I will be having words when I get down this evening. Hopefully I can keep my temper, because when I lose it I really really lose it.

F****** idiots. If any of the horses are injured they will be receiving the bloody vets bills.

Having just spoken to Mrs Elle, I would not like to be the contractors when she gets down there!! What complete idiots!! You would think that seeing horses charging around that you *might* have done something to influence it.

I'd let it out of your system now, cool down a bit and then have words, last thing you want is to risk loosing your grazing or getting on the wrong side of the land owner, however you have every right to be angry, thankfully no harm was done and they will remebmer next time to let you know and close the gates etc.
 
Hope they're all ok. This happened to me once too. Fortunately contractors did keep the gate closed, but they were supposed to call before they arrived so I could move the horses out. My chestnut mare decided they shouldn't be in their field so she chased them out

Well...they shouldn't have been there...Couldn't really blame her for it - I did tell them to give me notice and the horses would be moved.

Try to keep calm, don't lose your field, just explain why you're upset and what could have happened. I'm sure they won't make the same mistake.
 
OH has just been down and had a row with the contractor. Contractor was saying he had right of way to drive tractor in field, OH said we rent field and nowhere in our contract does it state that others can drive willy nilly into field without letting us know.

OH says the horses seem OK and he has put the fencing up and moved it so they aren't near the gate.

I am still bloody angry and will be talking to the owners when I get in.

Some people are just compete idiots and I am still so cross I could cry

Poor you!! I would be livid too! Maybe wise to stir clear of the owners for a day or two, give yourself time to calm down, alot of things are said in the heat of the moment, and then 9 out of 10 times, you end up regretting it xxxx

Yep, I'd be furious too. Breathe, though, breeeaaaathe.......you'll do yourself no good in such a state while you're waiting to speak to the owners. There's a chance the owners didn't realise the contractors would need or want access.

that's happened to me too, people were coming to lay hedges and erect some fencing and 3 of us had words with them about leaving the gate to the main road open yet they still did it. I drove down one lunch to go to the yard, stopped when I saw the gate open and marched past them all having their lunch to close it. One said they needed it open - I may have lost my temper with them. They were eating ffs, there were 4 youngsters in the field who were all upset. YO didn't actually know what was happening (or that's what she said).

No, its complicated in that you go up the owners drive (with a gate) and through their garden to get to the field. The main gate is locked but the contractors were in digging out for a new drive.

They were dumping the rubbish in the corner of the field as per the owners instructions it seems. Unfortunately no one thought to tell me.

Anyway, its now sorted, horses are ok, digger man doesn't need access to the field anymore and owner is aware that I wasn't impressed.

And I didn't lose my temper

but do you not still have a separate gate in to your field? I rent land too, and last year discovered that the landowner had gone in to the field with a petrol strimmer to cut down some weeds while my horses were in it. Between that, and a random stranger going in to the field to feed them carrots, and some other worrying events, I put a bike chain with a padlock on it whenever the horses are in. Actually it was my landowner that recommended it after someone was seen taking photos of my horses.

Sorry got a bit waffly, but I'd recommend a lock if you can possibly manage it, it might not stop a determined thief but would stop or deter many other possible incidents. And definitely definitely calm down before you talk to the landowner! I was raging after the strimmer incident last year, but luckily didn't see the owner for a few days; so managed to talk to him calmly and persuade him of the error of his ways
