I don't understand why you'd do this...

I work at a boarding kennels and cattery. We have lots of regular customers who come in for weekends, weeks, two weeks usually a couple of times a year.

But there are a few that come in for very long periods very often throughout the year. We currently have a dog with us who is a lovely girl and is in the house rather than the kennels as she's such a regular.

She arrived mid January and was meant to be going home in the next few days but her stay has been extended for a week which will mean her stay will be a full two months.

I understand her owner works away a lot but I don't understand why you would have a dog if you knew you were going to be away so often! You're spending thousands on a dog you hardly get to see..

I know.

Our neighbours put their dog and cat in kennels all the time - not quite as long as that, but several times a year. We joke that the animals think their real home is the kennels and that they come to the neighbours for holidays! Last month the lady was going on about their old cat and how it hadn't been well and she was worried for it. Two days later they went on holiday without a care in the world.

Not real animal people.

Maybe the owners circumstances have changed.
My OH used to be the main dog walker, now he works away, it's down to me.
If he didn't have me, he'd struggle to keep our animals, or maybe he'd do as the owners of that dog do and kennel them.
I guess it beats selling them or even worse, abandoning them :(

We had to put ours in kennels while we were between houses. They were there for 9 weeks.

We also used to go to Australia for 4 weeks a year, plus going away for perhaps 3 or 4 weekends during a year.

The dogs did love going to the kennels, but they loved coming home even more :)

i had to leave my cats in kennels for 5 months as I had to move house for work reasons, I was selling my house in lincolnshire and was renting in berkshire while I looked to buy. One of my 2 was actually a kitten and the kennel owners fell in love with her and asked if they could keep her as she had been there longer than I had had her :( it was the best solution for her, and my rental house allowed me to bring the other cat down. one was fine, but they would not allow me to have 2.
