I don't want a cure for navicular

riding_high, this is exactly the sort of instance I think should be reported to the FRC. That farrier is no doubt still out there doing similar work on other people's horses. It is down to us as horse owners to force the industry to eradicate such carelessness or ignorance.

Interesting stuff Laura, thanks for that. There has been so much excellent research carried out over the past 15-20 years regarding foot balance and skeletal alignment which so many vets (and farriers sadly) seem to be completely oblivious of. I have some of Dr Bob Bowkers papers somewhere - I will dig them out and post them as they make facinating reading.

Sally, that is an excellent article about shoeing. It is quite true that if a horse is doing a lot of road work every day a set of shoes only lasts about 3 weeks.

The only thing that really bugs me with KC id the trademarking of things (just very American I guess) such as the 'Suspension Theory of Hoof Dynamics' - now I think that everything he says is correct at this point of time, but is there a need to TM the term?!!!

And also his use and total devotion to homeopathy which to me is a complete load of crap until proved in proper scientific trials!

I try and keep an open mind and take the view that not even Pete Ramey is perfect and 100% right. lol
Somehow between all these people striving to learn and working with horses day in day out I believe great strides are being made, it just needs the establishment to start to take some of this stuff on board fully and put the horse rather than profit first! Some hope but you never know!

Yes I agree with you there. I think things will have made another great leap again in another 5 years or so from now - hopefully when the establishment see people rehabbing their written off horses!!!

i did write to them with photos of the shoes, my horses feet before the shoes were removed and pics of afterwards but they didn't do anything.

alot of people use him and he is well thought of, but i also know a few people who aren't happy with his work.
it's not even as if my horse is difficult to shoe, he would stand there all day to be done!

not only was the rolled toe not central, or a nail going through the roll BUT it wasn't even a proper roll, he had just hammered the outer edge up. it looked very messy.

I too have reported apalling farriery work and abusive practices to a horse (and sexually abusive comments to one lady owner) to the FRC and they have done nothing. They appear to be toothless.

They really do need dragging into the 21st century! We can only hope that if these kind of situations keep being reported and owners demand response that they will be forced to start taking action.

With so many farriers agreeing that the FRC is of little use in maintaining standards, how are clients to know who to trust and where to go when there is a problem?

I think the term 'navicular sydrome' covers a whole host of lameness problems, and vets tend to use this term if they are unable to find a correct diagnosis......
