I failed my towing test today. Quite upset, I failed on the reverse which I did perfectly on the lesson before. I did feel quite nervous. Has anyone else done this, or have any tips for next time.

Not done mine yet because have been put off by the cost tbh. I had 6 driving tests through nerves so I can sympathise. Have you got a re-test booked?

Sorry to hear this

The reverse is quite hard, I would just keep practicising it loads and loads and I'm sure you'll do better next time. Try not to worry about it. I failed my first test because I was too nervous! But the second time I felt much better and passed easily, so hopefully you can learn from this and pass next time.

THanks for the encouragement. I have already rebooked, for two weeks time. The cost does mount up especailly if you have to redo the test!! I will keep practising!

Nerves are a terrible thing a farmer friend of mine has just passed his trailer test on the third attempt despite the fact that he has been towing trailers on the farm since before he could drive a car,but his nerves just got the better of him each time.
Chin up and give it another go and Good Luck x

I'm hoping to do mine this year. Do you have any advice? What exactly was involved in the test? How long did each bit take? I get nervous just thinking about it, haha, so I've been pestering everyone I can with questions about it!!

Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs but an important thing to carry in your mind when reversing a trailer is that it cannot get any bigger(wider). that means that if you watch the side that you can see easily (usually the right) and keep that side near to any obsticles, curbs, lines or cones then the other side cannot hit anything or be in the wrong place, as the trailer can't get any bigger. it also makes it easier to picture the position of the trailer as you reverse, also make very small adjustments of the steering wheel to correct the wayward trailer. and never be afraid to pull forward to re align the car & trailer. Good luck next time.

I failed mine a couple of months ago, also on the reverse. Not completely my fault as my car broke down the day before so ended up sitting the test in a minibus that I had never driven before, let alone tried reversing a trailer off!

Haven't re-taken yet, had various car troubles then horse troubles so not had the money, but will do at some point. In the meantime I have an L plate stuck to me car and tow when I can , accompanied. Even took Ronan to horsepital in Gloucester myself, which involved popping into work for a meeting and reverse parking in a parking space on the way to pick him up! So am going to keep practicing and building my confidence cos I know I can do it! And so can you

Good luck next time x

Sorry to hear that, Bet you won't be so nervous next time. I didn't even know you had to do a test! Think i'll be getting a small horse box.

i failed mine on the reverse too. jack-knifed it after doing the exercise perfect every single time in practice. it was just my nerves. got them under control for the re-test a week later and passed with flying colours - sure you'll do the same

Ribena - Are you allowed to tow on the road with L plates? I thought you had to have passed your test to be on the road at all??
I would love to do my trailer test but am so confused about the costs. Places round here are quoting about £800 for intense course of lessons and the test, is this about right? I expect it is, just asking in hope that they accidently put too many 0s!

you have passed your driving test which automatically gives you provisional entitlement to tow a trailer, so it's perfectly fine to tow with L plates as long as someone with you has the trailer test or is old so doesn't need it.

Cost me £650 for my training and 2 tests.

holly kb- as star said. If we weren't allowed on the road at all with L plates then how would we learn

? You need the B+E provisional entitlement on your license though.

Remember if you need to pull forwards on the reverse exercise you can do this twice and only get a driver error marked, more than two incurs a serious fault and therefore you don't pass. You may also get out of your vehicle once to check where the rear of the trailer is when it is near the painted area it needs to be in when you complete the exercise, but do remember to stop the engine if you get out! Also remember effective all round observation is required.

Hey! You don't have to be that old to automatically have the right to tow!
