I feel absolutely awful and really guilty, today was our first day of improving George and my fitness and reducing our waistlines a little. So this evening I spent a good 10mins warming up in walk, and then instead of our usual trot a bit, stop a bit we trotted for 5mins solid on each rein with a little walk between reins and George was very good

I then decided 2-3mins of canter to start with as we probably only do 2-3 circuits normally. Did this on the left and George was a star and I was suprised at how fit and willing he was

, then the same on the right he started to get a bit unbalanced so I bought him back to trot and as I did I realised he was lame

I stopped straight away and got off.

Luckily my friend was at the yard, and had a look, and we trotted him up. She said it looked like he was 3/10 lame on his near fore. He wasn't really lame in walk just a little tentative. We checked his feet and legs and couldn't find any heat or swelling.

I feel awful, like I have made him hurt himself by working him harder

also despite my friend telling me not to worry I am, and I have everything crossed that it is just a knock and nothing awful. So if you could send George some vibes I would be very grateful.

Honestly, you would have made him lame from working him like that, so dont beat yourself up! Fingers crossed it is something simple. Chin up!!

Don't be so silly I'm sure he's just tweaked something.

Feeling better soon vibes coming for George, and calm down woman vibes for you

You can't have made him lame from that sort of work unless you're leaving out a huge spooking fit when he could have kicked himself. Far more likely that he kicked himself or pulled something out in the field and he didn't start to feel it until you were working.

All hooves crossed that he feels fine after a few days rest.

The same thing happened to my girly. I warmed her up on both reins in walk then did walk trot and canter on one rein and went to work on the other rein, she was doing this strange tripping thing. I asked her to trot and she was hopping lame

Turns out she had an abcess and didn't really feel it until that leg was on the inside bearing the weight. Hope George's ailment is as simple as an abcess

*fingers crossed*

ditto everyone else...at least you were a good mum and as soon as you felt he was lame you jumped off and started treating him...at the end of the day you weren't asking for anything a normal horse doesn't get asked to do- its probably just a tweak that just showed up once he was moving...fingers crossed he'll be fine in a day or two....

Fingers crossed he just took a wrong step and has a minor strain which will sort itself out overnight. Just a coincidental thing, not your fault at all. Vibes for George and hugs for you.

Poor George. Big hugs to you both, echo the others - hope it's just a minor strain. Lots of vibes for a speedy recovery to one of HHO's much loved horses!

You warmed him up well. You stopped straight away and got off. You did the right thing. These things happen. If he has tweaked something it is not the end of the world. It may be completely unrelated to what you were doing. You just have to wait and see how he is in a few days.

You did everything right. i'll bet he's done it in the field and only felt it when you asked him to work. See how he is but I bet you a chocolate wafer that he's fine in a day or so and looking smug that he got out of work!

I am sure his lameness has nothing to do with your schooling session, just an unlucky tweak which hopefully he will soon be over.

Dont be hard on yourself, these things happen.
I feel like a really bad Mum at the moment too - I thought it would be a good idea to take "the neurotic one's" shoes off as he is not being ridden, but he has been unbelievably footsore and after a chat with my farrier we have decided to put his fronts back on - I feel terrible for causing him so much pain.

Speedy healing vibes to George and big "make you feel better" hugs for you.

Thank you all for your kind words, boy did I feel cr*p last night. I have spoken to my YM this am and she has trotted George up, he is completely sound in walk this am and only very vaguely lame in trot. There is no heat, swelling or increased pulse in the leg/foot, so everything crossed that it really was just a tweak. He has gone out in the little paddock today and obviously we will be keeping a close eye on him for a few days.

Hovis_and_sidsmum - I am hopeful that you will owe me a choccie wafer!

Awful feeling isn't it but I am sure he'll be fine. My sister's did similar when he was stood still! Well, we'd pulled over to let a car past, started to move off and he sort of twisted his foot slightly on an uneven driveway - similar to us when we go over on our ankle I guess. I couldn't believe he was actually lame afterwards - only in trot though!

He was sound within a couple of days so god knows what he did and that was 2 years ago. Funny how he can jump and gallop etc no problem but scares me by tweaking himself doing something so simple!

I am sure George will be fine.
