I feel mean - rugging

My little cob is the only horse on the yard now without a rug on, my other gelding is a wimp and now clipped so has had a rug on for a while and our mare was clipped a while ago and has just started having a rug on but no fill.
They are out 24/7 and we had our first frost last night.
I don't think he needs a rug but still feel mean. Who else has theirs out 24/7 naked at the moment?
 
Yes mine is out with no rug and no I don't feel mean at all TBH, it's hard because it's totally against what I always did with my last horse but I as I lost her with laminitis it's made my resolve stronger. Our new horse needs to loose weight therefore no rugs, hay and happy hoof only and lots of exercise all on the advice of our vet.

He is as happy as a pig in........ Xx
 
Mine is also the only naked one on the yard. She too lives out 24/7 and has a bib clip. I don't feel bad, she really doesn't feel the cold unless it is wet and I know if I put a rug on her she would not be a happy bunny! I know people are talking about me and I am fairly new to the yard but remember you know your horse best!
 
Dont feel mean. Its great to have such an easy horse.


I have a fairy of a horse who needs to put on weight and shivers even in summer!!! High maintence horse I have!!!!
 
There are quite a few ponies out without clothes at our place still, I think you can cause problems sometimes by rugging as they are after all designed to cope with the elements. Having said that my boy is of course clipped and rugged and stabled at night, but he doesn't feel the cold so still only in lightweights, if you put anything thicker on he'd sweat and itch, so don't feel bad, you know what best for your horse.
 
Both my boys are out 24/7 and naked

The old man 23 years young who is a Conny X is naked and was naked ALL last winter :eek: and guess what he was warm as toast and looked like a little polar bear, however, he will be clipped and lightly rugged this year as is working a little more than last year.

The other one also a cob X type is in a fly rug coz he suffers with sweet itch and is still itchy so daredn't take it off, but will have a hunter clip in November once im back off holiday and will be rugged but still out 24/7.

If my boys didn't get sweaty when worked they wouldn't be clipped and consequently wouldn't be rugged either!!
 
Im not alone then :) he doesn't seem bothered and itn't cold, he hasn't even had a rug on in the wet weather, i won't be clipping him either, he will be 4 in March, isn't in work and has a little bit too much weight on him.

My other gelding is a complete wimp, he is 17 and he would shiver if he got slightly wet and cold, when he gets cold he gets very grumpy and starts picking on the others.
 
It's why I never clip until well into November, then I'm not worrying about too hot in the day and too cold at nght.... Temperature tends to be constant-ish then!

Dragonslayer - Me too for exactly the same reason! can't be doing faffing arond chopping & changing rugs far too lazy! leave em as long as poss then clip when its easier to decide on which rugs to use

We have to clip our mare early, she starts getting her winter coat through then gets sore spots, clipping is the only thing that seems to stop them, they have been looked at by the vet and she was allergy tested but the injections we were given for her didn't stop it.
 
Mine aren't rugged at the moment and are fine because it is nice and still even though it is cold. They have lots of natural and man made shelter though, if they didn't have that I'd have rugged them by now. When it is biting winds and rain they will definitely be rugged then.
 
Me too!- my 18 month old is not rugged yet as he doesn't need rugging as resembles a wooly bear! he is out in day and in at night. When it gets colder he has a fleece to wear at night and then when it gets colder a couple of different weight stable rugs. If it rains in the day then I put his turnout rug on and he'll definitely wear it in the winter.

I did feel mean at first when the others are all rugged, but then I suppose they are all clipped out and rugged, and he stays as warm as toast without rugs!
 
My section a isn't rugged, is out 24/7 and probably won't be rugged unless we get arctic conditions. She's...let's say portly :rolleyes: and has her winter whoolies on well and truly. So I don't feel bad about it- last winter she didn't lose the weight she should have (my fault for over rugging her) and went into summer like a little pig, I definitely won't be making the same mistake twice.
 
mine is one of only two still unrugged, cause hes not clipped yet and has a huge natural coat on, the other horse is waiting to be clipped too

once they're both done they'll be rugged but for now they're naked!
