Ned had crap feet, farrier due next weds, I've been off riding for 6 weeks until now, anyway......rode today and clenches moved and shoes clanking....loose shoes get ripped off and damage his crappy feet even more, so.....farrier coming to yard (not mine) today and I asked him to tighten clenches for me, he said putting a new nail in each would be better....so......back foot ned kicks forward flinging farrier into stable door....so does that mean he hurt him? (he's never done that before) secondly after farrier left when I was applying antebac as normal I notice blood round the new nail on front foot....so.....neds not lame but I am worried sick that this will progress into some problem with both feet

I've turned him out and going back up in an hour or so to trot him up....god I'm sooooo worried.....I really need some good luck at the moment

any suggestions

he might have just gotten too close - like when you hit the quick of your nail - but i must say blood around the nail site doesnt sound right to me.

(EDIT: i just looked it up and it does sound like nail bind - get farrier to take the mail out )

Sounds like the nail might have gone in too deep to the sensitive part of the foot.

You'll know if it has, cos the horse will be hopping lame when you walk him out.

If so I would pull off the offending shoe, poultice and get your farrier out as soon as you can.

I don't really know much about shoes unfortunately but it doesn't sound right. I think you're right to trot him up. He might have kicked out if something spooked him, or it could be that farrier hurt him. There definitely shouldn't be blood, there's no blood vessels in the insensitive part of the hoof so it sounds like the nail's gone through to the sensitive part. I'm surprised he isn't lame tbh. Is there anyone who knows what they're loking at on your yard who could have a look for you?

could it be more likely the farrier has nicked his finger and that's his blood you are seeing?

If he has got pinched by the nail, horse will probably be hopping lame very soon, but even if that's the case, there wouldn't be blood.

omg....I feel really sick about it now....

Someone looked at the blood and thought it was probably ok cos he's not immediately lame and advised me to check him later, as for the back foot well its much harder to tell if they are lame, and he wasn't on both immediately.

I've got a really bad feeling about this, given the bloody albatross thats beeing around my neck for longer than I can remember
