Have just been up and fed my horses, whilst i'm there I wipe any flies off. So was getting flies off from round H's (gelding) private area aka sheath region and he flops his winky down.:o
Have been meaning to attempt to clean it for awhile now, so I gently caught hold of it and had alittle prob:o:eek:.
He didnt object (think he actually enjoyed it  pervert:o) so am going to attempt to clean it tomorrow :)
But can someone explain how to extract the 'bean' I had a quick feel tonight but didnt want to hurt him.:o
Also what does a normal one look like?

Thanks :o

i am having the same problem with this bean thing...where is it supposed to sit? surely it cant be in the 'hole' as it would block the wee? or am i being thick?

PMSL sorry!!!!!!!!!!!

Check to make sure there are no prospective boyfriends, elderly neighbors, or Brownie troops with a line of sight to the proceedings. Though of course they're probably going to show up unexpectedly ANYWAY once you're in the middle of things. Prepare a good explanation.

I found my geldings under the head of the penis, to put it nicely :p

You have to fold back a bit of skin and it's different to the rest of the smegma (which is black and hard) and it's a bit like wax

Phil has only had a hard bean once, when the vet came down, since then I've managed to clear it before it gets too big.

Yes, it does cause urinary issues. This was how I realised Phil needed his cleaned, he wasn't straining, but his wees were about 2 seconds long and very regular. It can cause a blockage (and a £180 vet bill  :p) if you don't keep an eye :)

I do my lad regularly with baby wipes, if needs be baby oil will dissolve more greasy stuff, or you can wash gently with any soft soap, pat dry and baby oil. The build up under the penis just comes away easily enough. Just be regular with it and as xRobyn says don't let it build up.
I don't find it an issue, please don't feel bad about it, I have been doing this for years and to me it seems a normal part of care of a gelding. Just be gentle.
I still can't stop laughing about the Brownie quote!!

Some years ago I had a cob who had a very flabby sheath area and needed it cleaning regularly. One day my fairly young daughter was doing it for me (cob was excellent and I was supervising) when my non-horsey brother walked round the corner and nearly fainted with shock! He said afterwards he thought he should have videoed it and probably could have sold it for a fortune to some of the more kinky websites!!

well i think next time im down im going to have to have a feel for a bean, because i have never looked next to his hole, hes weeing fine but there could be one there still. i just need to concentrate on not having my head kicked off. thanks!

Ok, gets ready to feel veeery stupid....

Have owned horses for 20 years, geldings and stallions, (and mares....) and kept them clean with varying degrees of sucess (not much success in one stallions case)

But what on earth is 'the bean'

(goes and hides in corner with dunces hat on.....)

What is the easiest way to do this for a shy horse or owner!!! I saw one quote of baby oil, can it be the lavendar baby oil??? Stupid question but don't want to get it wrong!! If you use baby oil do you just rub with that to remove dirt, but guessing not to remove bean as surely will cause irritation??? Also guessing no need to was oil off? Thanks

You must NOT use any kind of baby oil!! You mustn't mess about with the natural bacteria in the sheath or penis. Again this goes for all the sheath cleaners you can buy. The best way to clean them is to buy some KY jelly or any other 'water' based lubricant, wear gloves and then stick it right up into the sheath as far as you can go - don't be surprised if you get up to your elbows up there, then whilst smearing the jelly up there you can have a feel around for any hard lumps and the bean - the bean will be up as far as you can go, you will know when you have found one if it is there.

Leave the KY jelly up there for 12 hours or so and then wash out, the vets thought I would have to do this about 3 or 4 times for my dirty lad and all it took was one clean. Ok very embarrassing to have to buy the KY jelly but definitely worth it and it is the kindest stuff for your horse.

My 12 year old son can be reduced to hysterics by simply waving an old packet of 'sheath wipes' in front of his face....:D

(ps....I have never actually used them, they are all dry now but I cannot throw the packet away due to their comedy value)

OK thanks for this, will give it a go.

Stinky is a filthy gelding - has to have his sheath washed out weekly in summer and at least once a month in winter. Not helped by him rubbing his belly as it gets itchy and filling the sheath with mud and grit. He also produces a lot of black gunge. My vet said he is healthy, but some geldings are just like this.

I only use water - and he likes the hose put up it in warm weather, give it a good flush, leave the water to soften the grud I then gently rub out the dirt and rinse again. I use an old squeezy bottle with warm water in cold weather.

Beans - I check for these every few weeks or he will develop large ones that are difficult to remove.

Basically on the willy you will see the pee tube and each side of it are little pockets - basically roundish holes. Gently investigate them and you will see what looks like hard cheese - if it has gone into a hard lump you need to gently squeeze them out and if you have a gelding that objects or has ones that are very difficult to extract you will need a vet to sedate and do the job.

Stinky at 2 had one half the size of my thumb and it took a lot of getting out but thankfully he stood still and let me do it and out it flew. I now clean the pockets regularly to stop lumps forming. He makes it clear he enjoys it and to be honest a full out slightly erect willy is much easier to clean - god I sound like a perve!

My OH calls me the horse wa**er:o

Give me a mare anyday - one wipe and done.:D

I've heard talk of the bean but have never gone searching for it. I've kept geldings for 18 years and they have all managed to keep their cleans themselves...now that I think about it I'm not sure how?!

I found my boy's bean a few weeks ago, not the nicest experience but atleast they're gone now!

Ditto what everyone else has said, if you gently pull pack the end of the penis (far easier if it's out so you can see what you're doing!) you'll see there's a kind of cirle around the uretha and smegma builds up in here. It's pretty easy to see when you do it, but can definitely gross you out lol!!

I used red rum sheath cleaner to do my boy's sheath and seemed to work really well, surprising how far up your arm can go!! And he started enjoying it at one point, dropping his bum lots lol!

Just felt really embarrassed because as I was doing this lovely job, one of the liveries turned up with her little girl and I had to keep stopping so she didn't see, just imagine the questions.... lol!

I wondered the same thing, then found it a week or so ago. Wasnt really sure how to go about getting the bean out....i knew it was quite a big one from looking at it....anyway on monday night i had lead paddy out in hand and on our way back to the yard he was very relaxed and letting it hang out so i stopped him in the road (we are in a very very remote area!!) and had a really good look and squeeze. He stood perfectly still and didnt flinch at all....but i would be ready for a bit of a protest just to be on the safe side.
I am not joking when i say i got a bean the size of a golf ball out of him the poor poor boy and he just let me do it. I dont think he had had one removed for years so hopefully he feels a lot better for it. But basically its a hard lump of waxy looking stuff inside the entrance to the penis by the urethra. Pull the skin back a bit or squeeze the tip gently you will either see one when you pull the skin back gntly or you will feel it when you gently squeeze.
Good Luck :-D i dont reccomend the "popping a bean out whilst out on a walk" method if you live anywhere remotely built up....it could be an embarrasing one to explain!

My gelding had a swollen sheath a couple of years ago and was feeling a bit off colour. I called the vet who could not get near him. He was given a sedative to 'drop it' but no way would he. The vet had a feel around and suggested leaving well alone and left some antibiotics. Well when the vet left he then dropped it and I had a good feel. There was something hard in the end and I thought there was no way it could come out of a small hole. I squeezed gently and coaxed the bean out. It was the size of a conker. It stood on my dresser for a few weeks to show to all male visitors who couldn't believe it!

Just to add to those who say they've never had problem; Phil was fine for 9 years. Some geldings are fine, but others struggle, it all depends on the individual :) Just keep an eye out for; swollen sheath, dark/strong smelling urine, inability to empty bladder, short wees, frequent wees etc and sort of 'get to know' what you horse is like.

Linked because they are a bit graphic; Smegma under the 'hood' of the penis: http://www.evdsdentalinstruments.co...@random41940634b401d/article_oldhorses_07.jpg
