that people will actually buy horses or stranger still not buy them because of thier colour.

Surely a good horse is a good horse regardless of weather its a particular colour or not.

I have allsorts and breeds that i event.
I've never selected a horse on colour.

There has recently been a lot of anti chestnut mare pro coloured posts ect (and yes i have both)
Its just wierd IMO

yeh it is a bit wierd, but then when i was looking dad was like you can have anythin apart from a coloured or a grey just because he didnt like them but i didnt mind as he was paying:P

unless you want to do coloured classes obviously

i dont like roans that much but ive got one, if its a good horse its a good horse

I know what you mean.

We are currently looking for a 14.2 SJ pony for eldest daughter . I would prefer not to have a grey (from a cleaning point of view) but at the end of the day, if a grey pony is the best pony for her - handling, ridability, performance etc - then so be it!

Not so weird.

I only looked at duns for my first horse mainly because I had fond memories of a dun riding school horse. Not exactly sensible reasoning I'm sure but the dun I eventually bought turned out to be perfect all round.

I'd probably never buy a grey or coloured horse cos I think it might take too much effort to keep clean ! What can I say, I'm a lazy slob ! LOL

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, don't forget, and the horse has to be pleasing to the eye of whoever buys it (as well as being suitable for purpose). Personally I would never even go and look at a coloured horse (regardless of how good it was) because I simply don't like them and I would not find the horse pleasing to look at/do etc. I'm also well known for my dislike of bays (boring, boring, BORING) but at the moment I am trying to get my mare in-foal to a plain bay (not a white hair on him) Andalusian! Bay he may be but he is stunning - so I'm not THAT blinkered . . .

I don't find it that weird to be honest.
I would never spend money on a palamino or a spotty - they do nothing for me and if I am going to spend thousands on a horse, I actually want to like what looks over the stable door at me.
Thankfully those 2 colours are pretty rare, I would be stuffed if I took a dislike to bays!

I wouldn't not buy a certain coloured horse - not could I justify spending extra money on a horse purely on its colour. I do like horses that are slightly different. Saying that I love Chex field pal who is a chestnut mare, and I used to really dislike chestnuts and mares lol

I've never been lucky enough to choose my own horse, have ridden whatever came my way on loan untill I bred my own from one of those loan horses (turned out grey!) So I don't care what colour I get as long as it does the job

I thin it really depends why you are buying the horse. If its to perform at a certain discipline at the top of its level then colour is not an issue. However as most horse owners buy them as a hobby why not go with what you like best after all if we all liked the same thing the world would be aboring place.

I have had every horse colour under the sun, I'm not too keen on coloureds but I have had two, still own one of them. I try to steer clear of greys because they dont seem to shine the same as the rest, and ones I have had had xray vision for mud...

I think it depends on what you like. I had someone come and try my chestnut and they said they wished he was black as they've always wanted a black one! (luckily the horse was for their husband, but I do believe she did buy a black WB in the end!).

I personally would not buy another chestnut (I laughed when people said they had an attitude problem but having had one, I believe them!) UNLESS I saw the horse competing etc. and knew his record. I love greys so always favour those, I dont know why as they're hell to keep clean but having had 3, they've always been super honest and my best horses! And I dont really like Appaloosa's, not sure why. Although saying that, I wouldnt turn down a horse purely on colour but if it were chestnut or spotted then it'd need to work a little bit harder to win me over!

i have a spotty and am looking for another appy cause i like the breed in general having ridden quite a few i had a chestnut gelding and we just didn't gel i guess it sounds stupid but if i do get another i would defo prefer one and wait for the right one to come up then again i do want to breed spotties in the future so each to their own i guess

I think it would be easier if we didnt have to take personality/ability into consideration...... after all we dont all drive slime green or pukey orange (not a dig at chestnuts) because they are economical to drive or handle better than other colours...... so why have a horse you dont find pleasing to look at.

Of course if your first consideration is to compete then you may need to choose differently.... who cares what colour a McClaren (sp) F1 car is as long as its first on the grid!!!

You just dont get the choice when shopping for a horse..... that said, I just wouldnt go to look at a horse i didnt like the look/colour of, because regardless how good they were i would still dislike certain colours..... going to be careful what i say due to previous post!!!! Those who saw it will know what i like and dont like, those that didnt will be better off not knowing

I buy horses because I like their faces - they have to have a kind eye regardless of colour. I bought one of mine as an unhandled 5 yo having seen her once in a field because I thought she had a kind expression.
13 years on and I still have her - never a bite, kick or even dirty look from her, so I guess I was right.
Oh, and I own a grey who hates getting dirty so how lucky am I???

well im not really bothered about colour IMO - although i do like dark bays. frankie is piebald and has 2 blue eyes - not my ideal by any means but we get on well and i love him to bits! xxx

to chex, loving your siggy and horse on it, gorgeous! with regard to the post and thread...i loaned and shared any colour - it was most important that i bonded with the pony/horse but i did particularly want to buy a black or coloured - maybe its like the stereotypical female buying the colour of the car rather than the car???

Well at the moment I have a chestnut blanket spot, a bay blanket spot, a golden dun, a palomino and the obligatory chestnut filly! I freely admit that I love colours
wink.gif
BUT they have to first and foremost be nice horses! which they all are, with the exception of the chestnut, who over-reacts to everything, and frequently jumps out of her field. Unfortunately, I bred her, so I've only got myself to blame! I don't get bored looking out into my paddocks and seeing bay after grey after bay!

I agree with the fact that you spend thousands on a horse, you at least want something that you find visually appealing.

I personally would never buy a cremello, a white grey or a piebald, they do nothing for me. I also dislike roman noses but that's another story. There are plenty of horses out there and those colours do appeal to other people, therefore they will find a nice home - I don't see a problem with it. It's not as if that one horse is the ONLY one out there with a nice temperament, if you've got the time to search why not go for something that you truly want rather than one you don't like the look of?

No offence meant to those with no preferance, just my opinion.

The last time I bought a horse I went out specifically looking for a palomino QH. I was fortunate in that I found one that ticked all the boxes quite quickly, but I would have been willing to bide my time and wait until the right one came along.

It is the only time I have EVER hunted for a particular color as I go along with the "a good horse is never a bad color" theme.

I must admit I like bays! Just think they are easy to keep looking good. However when looking for my last horse I realised that just looking at bays was limiting me. Honestly it took me about six months to come to terms with this!!So decided to look at other colours and ended up with a chestnut mare!!! Never thought I would do it as I only did bays!!!

Despite my sig I have never regretted it! Love my girl to bits. ...But would prefer her in bay

Very sad!!! Dont like black much either! How prejudiced am I!?????

Just writing this has made me open my eyes!

I wouldn't discard a good horse because of its colour, I also find this very strange (I have a chestnut mare!).

Although saying that and I really dont want to offend anyone, I don't think that I would like a Cremello (sp?) I just personally think they are fairly ugly, but if my dream horse was one then I would make an exception!
