(Slightly following on from this post - http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=590900 )

After battling with my nappy/explosive mare Missi since last November I finally managed to hack her out alone without having to get off and lead her most of the way :D :D :D

Less then a week ago I couldn't even get on her and had to turn for home whilst I was leading her out as she was being so dangerous (leaping, broncing, spinning, kicking out, shooting forward etc - all on the road :( ).

Today she napped, a lot, but it was the stop-dead-or-reverse kind of nap rather then I'm-going-to-kill-you-if-you-ask-me-to-move-forward one :D

Armed with the 'ride it like you stole it' motto flying round my head and the realisation that I had to make her think that going forward was the easiest option (thanks to a friend - you know who you are ;) ) I was able to ride her through it.

It was painfully slow and the ride took an hour and a half (instead of the 40 mins it should take) but we did it :D I rode like a complete wally and my legs and back where aching from all the effort but I can work on me at a later date. She was nice and relaxed, on a loose rein and met lots of 'scary' things that would previously have had her trying to catapult me into space!

Pointless post that will seem like a very insignificant thing to many but I just had to share :D :D

Well done! I love this post my mare is very nappy on her own and I hope to make this achievement one day! You should be very proud I find it terrifying!

Well done 3Beasties, that must be a great feeling! :) My loan boy is the same, we can leave the yard OK but half way up the lane he just stops and reverses or turns around...any tips?

Pointless ..No! Encouraging ; Yes :) well done you. Lovely to hear of others' successes when you are fighting the same type of battle with self and horse:)

I love posts like this, they make me smile! Your sheer joy at doing this shines through. Well done for persisting, hopefully now she'll realise that hacking is nice, not scary! It's such a shame when hacking is a trauma!

Well done! Thats a huge achievement and you should be very proud of yourself and your wee mare :D
Onwards and upwards :D

Thank you :D She got lots of cuddles, treats and grass (which if you saw my post about my grass-less field yesterday was quite a treat for her) :D

I felt ill before I got on her but I knew I had to do it. We've had a rocky road over the last few months but hopefully we will keep heading in the right direction :) Good luck with your mare :)

I had to outsmart mine by making her think that going forward was the easiest option.

As soon as I got on her today she started reversing so I took control and MADE her reverse (she'll be great at rein back ;)). We reversed for quite a way up the road (her head in the direction I wanted to go, so heading back the way we had come - I'd led her out of the yard) and then I stopped her and asked her to walk on. She tried to reverse again so once again I took control and back we went. Eventually she got to the stage where she would just stand when I asked her to walk on so I just kept kicking her (PC style :o ) until I got the smallest step forward, then lots of praise before asking again. It was painfully slow and I honestly wasn't sure if it would work, that first incident took 20 mins to get over, but gradually as the ride went on it took less and less time.

I've got her in a full cheek snaffle which I think really helps stop her from turning. She did manage to turn once today and again I just made it difficult for her until she did as I asked by bringing her head round in the direction I wanted to go and keeping it there until she turned. We did go up the road sideways for a little while but as soon as she turned her body the way I wanted it I gave her lots of praise and then carried on with the same tactics as above.

It may not be the best way to deal with it but it did work for me today, previously it wouldn't have worked with mine as she was so explosive that I couldn't put my leg on without her broncing, spinning, bucking etc. but I've lunged her every day since last Tuesday (after the disastrous walk out with her) and the extra work has definitely improved her state of mind!

A massive well done from me!! I know how frustrating a nappy horse can be and I also know how amazing it feels to finally have a good ride on one!

Certainly not insignificant! Well done again :D

It has been such a nightmare for me as I don't have a school so hacking round the lanes is really the only option! She also gets bored very easily so it's been a bit of a viscous circle as until she behaves we couldn't really do any more with her, we've literally done the same 40 minute hack every ride since November :o Hopefully soon we will be able to go further afield :D

Thanks :D I think I'm just so relieved that I could stay on and deal with it rather then not having any choice but to get off because she was having such an eppy!

Well done, so pleased to read you had a success today, hang in there it will get better and usually they give in suddenly and you wonder what all the fuss was about. At least hopefully you have the warmer weather ahead if you have to stand for a time or reverse!

Well Done you!!! Your mare sounds the duplicate of mine- I've been there and know how you feel!! I love the rein back move as well- I haven't had to use it for a long time though- and hopefully soon neither will you :) :)

Well done! Massive acheivement and now you have done it once it should just get easier cos you have one of the battles under your belt. Very impressed!

Well Done :D

I had a similar breakthrough last night with my own nutty madam - after a spin on the spot about going out of the gate (think she went round so fast I stayed in the same place!) we got all the way round the loop. We may have done most of it in either travers or shoulder in position but we did it :D

It's so much easier now the weather has improved as it has definitely stopped us from doing much needed work on a number of occasions this Winter.

I was so hot today from all the kicking :o that I nearly dumped my coat in the ditch to pick up on the way home!

Glad to hear it's worked well for you in the past :D

That's what I'm hoping although she's quite a clever mare so she's probably plotting her comeback already for tomorrow  :D

Well Done :D

It's such a great feeling isn't it! Well done :D

Very big achievement, well done!!

Thanks :D

I also love posts like these... If you can overcome your 'problems' then so can I.... Great news!

If I can then anyone can!

Hooray for you! Well done! You have mentioned some handy hints to try, so thanks. We WILL get out on our own this year ;)

Ha ha WELL DONE!!! Bet it feels good to be the winner ;). Little treasures aren't they sometimes. V v good on you for not taking any more of her nonsense :).

Not pointless at all!! A huge well done I have previously had a nappy horse and it is a total nightmare so I can imagine how pleased you must be!!!

I'm helping a girl ATM with her nappy pony and its a massive achievement for me on the ground not doing any of the physical work so you must be feeling over the moon!
Ride it like you stole it - I like that saying! Must pass it on to this girl!

'Ride it like you stole it' really does help :D

I won't bore you with updates every day but........I DID IT AGAIN :D :p :D

I stuck to the same routine as yesterday. Got on, had a short discussion about going forward followed shortly by another one and then we were off :D :D Still very S L O W L Y and I couldn't get her to trot on the way out (my bad, was asking too much really but I'll deal with that another day!) but we got all the way to the village with only the two initial naps :D

She stopped for a poo near to her worse napping spot, as there were cars coming and we were on the verge I decided to allow her to stop as we were safe and out of the way but I was prepared for a bit of a fight to get her going again. She surprised my by finishing her poo and walking on without even being asked and before the cars had past :D

The biggest thing of all, which I have to say was a MAJOR OH **** (plus many other choice words) moment for me was when we came across a group of 4 horses hacking in the village (having hacked around the village for the last 13 year this is the first time I've ever seen that many horses out!)! I will freely admit to having a slight panic and thinking about getting off but I parked us in a gateway, pre-warned the riders that I didn't know what she would do and hoped for the best  :o :o She was rather on edge and tried to spin and follow them, thought about broncing after them etc but I just let her watch them go, gave her a treat (again, my bad but it seems to re-direct her attention and I didn't really want her to squish the cute little pony...or the child on board for that matter :p) and with a tiny amount of discussion I turned her back the way we were heading and continued our ride :D

I knew we'd probably meet them again and it did cross my mind to purposely avoid them by turning around but I knew that would be the worse thing to do so I pulled my big girl pants up and kicked on! We met them again about 5 minutes later so I parked her in a lay-by and stopped to let them past, this time she didn't want to stand and was impatient to keep going in the way we were heading :D :D

So yer, definite progress although it will be a long road. She's still so new to me (got her at the end of September and have not really got to know the nice side of her ridden wise) so I need to learn to trust her as much as she needs to trust me. Deep down she is actually pretty brave and I know she will begin to enjoy hacking once we start having a bit more fun :)

Thanks for your encouragement, it really means a lot :)

I echo above post, it is not boring, it is great to read a post about things going better and you making strides and building up your confidence.

Well done, and do let us know how you progress.
