Hi, I was grooming our little pony Dolly yesterday and found a small lump under her tail :-( it is a hard pimple shaped lump about the size of a big pea. My friend said it looked likea sarcoid but the only sarcoids I have ever seen have had a scab or open sore bit on and this hasn't. I know I will need a vet to tell me what it is for definate but can anyone put my mind at rest until the vet can come out. My friends horse got cancer in his tail and they lost him really quickly to it :-( I'm terrified it could be this, we've only had her since september and her old owner never noticed the lump there and she was very meticulous when grooming!!

Thank you :-) Will be getting the vet out to check just to be on the safe side but fingers crossed that's all it is.

If it is a sarcoid what can be done about it?

Is Dolly a grey hun? Many (if not most) greys develop melanomas as they age and this sounds like it could be a melanoma under Dolly's tail. Sarcoids are skin cancers but they usually remain benign, although not always! If your vets suspect a sarcoid they may advise doing nothing, or treating it with Liverpool Cream. Whatever you do, don't apply products like tea tree or aloe vera shampoo. Any products that say things like "promotes growth of new skin" is a no-no if you're talking about skin cancers. You don't want to do anything that might make a sarcoid grow more aggressively. Sometimes the only way to know for certain if a lump is a sarcoid is to take a biopsy but the act of taking a biopsy can sometimes trigger further aggressive growth. If it's a melanoma, that's more likely to spread than a sarcoid but greys often have loads of them for years and years without any problems unless they are in an area that causes problems. Fingers crossed for a good outcome x

She is a grey yes, a very light grey welsh x arab, she is so pretty and dainty and an absolute diamond. We were so lucky to have found her as she is perfect for my daughter :-)

Thank you! I will update when the vet has checked it out :-)
