It's doing good! just woke for a feed and now tucked up again after reheating the hot water bottle pleased he made the night.
I think its a blackbird too
Well done for helping!! I think you and Daisydo are right I also think it's a black bird.
It wasn't that long a go that I rescued a Thrush (cat thought I need a project), I managed to keep it alive for 2 weeks and then let it go in it's own time, out of the open bed room window Took age's tho to get the bed room clean again
Oh I am so glad to read this! I have only just picked up your pm and was worried that baby wasn't feeding. Well done for getting him through the night, he should do well now!
Where did you hear this? Birds have a poor sense of smell and in my experience (I repeatedly rescued some suicidal swallow nestlings last year), they DO come back, even when their poor attempt at a nest is replaced by the finest mudpie one's hands can produce!!
The usual advice for nestlings/fledlings is to leave them where they are (assuming they're uninjured) as the parents will probably be watching them and bringing food. Human interference may well scare the parent birds off.
However, if the baby bird has been rescued from a cat, then it will need antibiotics, so get it to a sanctuary if you can.
There is some useful information on the Tiggywinkles Website and they do some fantastic work (Luckily, I'm within 1/2 hours drive of Tiggywinkles, and ended up doing two trips there and back within 12 hours a couple of months ago, when my cat raided a nest of almost-ready-to-fledge blackbirds.) It's also worth looking at the RSPB Website too, who also have some useful advice.
I found a nestling yellow hammer a few weeks ago (it had some feathers), RSPCA advice leave it for parents to keep feeding, it died overnight so wish I had brought it home like OP has done hers...
I spoke to someone else who told me birds have a poor sense of smell.
I too am a swallow rescuer, I have had 3 lots (3 different nests) all fledge this year and repeatedly put the fledglings back into the nest at nighttime from the door or low ledges where they haven't made it up high enough to the nest - parents keep on feeding them.
I haven't had to make them a nest yet but did make the parents some mud to build with when we had the hot dry spell!
He is indeed doing well, he has had a feed around once an hour since 8am, he already looks bigger and stronger and a few more fluff bits!
Will hopefully be taking him later on today, the centre is quite a way away and OH has the car till 5.
Shall keep feeding it in the meantime
He's feeding really well, have watered down the egg so theres fluid in it too, hes really strong now, having to take it camping with me tonight with the kids as no-one here to look after it hotwater bottle and scrambled egg at the ready, hoping to get it to the rescue centre tomorrow!
Cob&Onion, I love the fact that you have taken the little fella under your wing (sorry, couldn't resist). If there were more like minded people the world would be a far nicer place. Good on you.
Blackbirds are my favourite British bird. I hope that he continues to thrive and that you get him to a rescue centre.
