Someone who mucks out at the yard called me cruel today because I put my horse out for an hour without any rugs! It was cold but there was no wind & it was bright sunshine so I thought it would be nice for him to make the most of it. He's got a low chaser type clip so still has plenty of hair but to hear her you'd have thought he was going to die of hypothermia

He was a very happy chappy & didn't even stop for his usual sweet at the gate. He had a good roll, then had a good grooming session with his pony (who was also naked but apparently that was ok

) then a major buck & gallop session before finally settling down to munch hay. I got a rather dirty look when I went back to put his rug on before I went home.

So am I the only weirdo who turns out naked for a few hours on a cold bright day?

im a weirdo too!

provided its not raining and not extremely cold, ill derug and turnout nekked for a bit, so they feel the warmth of the rugs when i put them back on for bedtime

Oh good - I'm not the only one! It's not even as though he's some fine boned skinny little thing, he's a purebred ID who in theory should be able to rough it with the best of them (shame no-one told him that).

you evil cruel people lol if i didn't have skinny tb i would too, its nice for them to get out of the rugs and feel the air on there skin, but the pony i look after is naked 24/7

I'd probably look at you funny, not because you are cruel, but would think you were insane due to mud.

Then again I have revolting horses that dig holes and do their uttmost to be disgusting. Would only turn them out naked if mud factor was low!!

Ponies and horses have been designed through nature to survive!
they only get rugs on due to humans because we clip! letting him out in his au naturale state is NOT going to do him any harm and probably let me enjoy himself and gallop etc with a bit more umph!
Wouldn't worry about silly peoples comments!
I thought this post would be you beating your horse and people telling you not to! Not just letting your horse enjoy himself!
DO IT AGAIN! and just ignore whoever made a comment!

Cotswold SJ I usually end up scraping the mud off with a metal curry comb (bet she wouldn't approve of that either!) while wondering if he's a horse or a hippo. The amount of mud he can grind into his coat is horrific & I suspect parts of him won't be properly clean again until his spring bath

. Sometimes I watch him dig up a nice muddy patch to roll in & I know I must be mad - what sane person would create that much work for themself

Lucy_Nottingham I wasn't worried about it, I thought it was quite funny

. Sadly she'd probably have been far less bothered if I'd been beating him up .....

My cob is full clipped but unless it is freezing, he and our clydie who is chaser clipped get an hour in the school to groom and air their skins most days. I normally exercise them first and then whilst nice and warm (not sweaty) they groom and have horse time in the indoor school.

Luckily for me I can keep them clean, but let them groom and go without rugs rather than out in the field and turning into mud monsters.

A few hours in the sun on a warm winter's day is different to out in the rain or freezing cold - sad that people can't tell the difference.

I put ours out naked if its nice and warm and im on the yard for a couple of hours, even when they are fully clipped. They love it.

Tell the nosey parkers to mind their own business.

wouldnt worry to much i was called a evil woman cause to someone i dont feed my horses and they where going to report me to the rspca
i also leave rugs off why im mucking out field so i join ya and be a evil person too

I'm totally evil then...it has to be howling gale force, sub zero and raining before my girl gets a medium weight...She gets a light weight the rest of the time otherwise she gets to hot, even with a high trace clip.
