As i was turning my mare out this morning i ended up being kicked in the head and hand. After a trip to the nurse i am ok, luckly my hand took most of the blow.

At the time i was in too much shock to do anything other than let go of my horse. So i am now wondering if i should do anything when i next handle her, i know the time has pasted to disaplin her but is there anything else i could do after the event?

I will be wearing a hard hat from now on to handle her at all times, she is quite highly strung so i do often wear a hard hat to handle her if she is being silly.

Lesson learn, it could have been alot worse

Not much I can say other than wear your hat and handle her the same as you always have. What made her kick out? Did she spook or was she just being nasty?

I think she was just excited and wanted to jump about everywhere =/

Ah yes the treat is a good idea. I will try that, thank you.

I always give a treat at the gate - I used to have a mare that would p*ss off and kick out. Horrible. After a couple of weeks of giving her a little tit-bit, I then had a mare that would turn at the gate and nuzzle in my pockets while I took her headcollar off, then wait for her treat and then turn and p*ss off down the field, but by then I was safely away.
Also, if your mare is a bit flighty, have you thought of leading her in a slip-head with a bit, and a lunge line? Just a thought, you can get a bit more distance between you but also have control. And a slip-head is very easy to remove when you get to the field - just up and over the ears.

We are having problems atm with the entrance to the field, we are having to use a different entences where we walk along an alley way, it is quite wide (enough to get a tractor through) but all the horses find it very scary for some reason. So she may have just been wound up by this.

She will be staying out tonite as i dont have the strength to bring her in yet and i have no one else to help me. While we have to use this other entrance i think i will leave her out as much as pos to avoid other accidents, weather it be the horse or human.

Thanks for the advice and support guys

Good luck. I feel your pain. Mare mentioned above lashed out at me once and caught me in the thigh. It is painful and shocking all at the same time.

Depends on the situation. You say she did it out of excitement? Has she ever done it before? If not, I'd simply treat it as a one off thing and be more careful. My horse, who is the most unlikely horse to ever kick (and never had done) booted me a year ago - however Id been a moron and walked behind him with another horse whilst he was eating. The kick was aimed at the horse I was leading, but I got it. Was totally my own fault as I think is the case with most kicks.

So sorry, not nice at all hugs x

I always without fail stick to my routine of opening gate, get horse to move around gate til he is facing me and make him walk forwards towards me until I have closed the gate (I am always outside of gate), make him stand for around 20-30 secs before I unclip. I even do this with my Sec A so my little boy can also learn safe handling.

My horse is an excitable nutter and without firm but fair handling can really be a handful, but he has in the past 5 years settled to this way of turn out and just excepts it now.

The reason I do this is due to having my jaw broken front teeth pushed flat backwards, torn open lips complete with nail holes and an arm broken in attempt to protect my face but still my head took all that beating even with arm up (I was around 14 now 31 years). I was double barrelled in the head, an experience I will never ever forget!
