... for wearing a high viz vest. Granted I dont usually as we usually hack on the road about 200m to the off road hacking but due to the hunt we had to do all roads. As some of the country will know it was horrible today. It was like thick mist this morning and still wasnt the clearest all day (we went out at 2.30). I soon explained to her that I didnt care what she thought and id rather look stupid than dead and if she had that much of a problem then she go hacking on her own!! Apparently her dull read coat was enough for drivers to see her on her dark bay.

I always go out with hi-vis, whether it's my vest or ponys hi-vis exercise sheet. always.
A woman at our yard was telling us how she NEVER goes out in hi-vis, she wouldnt be caught dead in it and would rather get hit than wear it. IMO she was trying to show off but just sounded like an idiot instead. Most people on our yard use hi-vis but you still get the idiots who think they are an exeption and will never get hit and are always seen.

Who laughed? Silly person! TBH I never ever used to wear any high viz when I was younger but then there wasn't the same stuff around as there is these days and the traffic wasn't the same and maye also people weren't as desperate to get everywhere quite so fast! I always wear my equafleece gilet now whatever the weather/visibility yet i still see lots of people out without anything and, as a driver and a rider i find it quite worrying as maybe these people do not realise how well a bay/dark horse with a dark-clothed rider blends into hedgerows!!

Riders need to give drivers a chance for gods sake rather than just moaning about them driving too fast/close/braking too late etc!

I don't wear Hi-Viz but I do wear my father's reflectors, from when he was in mounted infantry in Greece in the First World War. They are brilliant. They are faceted like diamonds and are so bright. You clip one on each stirrup, and the third is worn by the horse on his browband or noseband. They're now 94 years old, and as good as the day they were made.

Well, we have two of the country's busiest motorways nearby and a couple if very busy junctions ... No way do I hack out without high viz! In fact, I used to keep mine London and would have been more inclined to ride with no high viz there than on country roads ;-)

Tell her she is welcome to come and live in my shoes for a day! I was wearing hi vis, but still got hit by a car!!! i can guarentee she would change her mind pretty quickly!!!

Some riders just have no idea how invisible they are.

A couple of years ago, I turned my car down a lane at twilight and didn't see a horse and rider until I was almost upon them . Luckily I drive quite slowly and could stop in time. Realizing the rider probably didn't realise how dark it was getting (it's different when you're not in a car), I wound down my window and very politely told her I'd not seen her till it was nearly too late. She indigantly told me I was wrong she was perfectly visible... Oh well, I tried... :(

Always hi viz
I live in a very quiet area, but still have hi viz leg wraps on the horses in case we part company and I wear a high viz jacket and hat cover, the horses are about to start wearing their hi viz exercise sheets, we frequently have children riding out with us and insist on them wearing hi viz, you only have one life, you may as well survive it

I very rarely do road work, am fortunate enough to have excellent off road hacking, However i always wear high viz as does my pony incase i come off. It makes you more visible in an emergency and as we do have a busy main road near by makes the pony visible. My friend jokes she can see me coming from miles away...

**** laugh at her for being so silly. I never go out without my hi viz even on nice days and I even wear it on the beach :)

Shes the one who should be getting laughed a for being naive. Going out without Hiviz should invalidate peoples insurance, then maybe there wouldnt be so many accidents/incidents on the roads involving horses :(

I always wear high-vis on both me and my horse and if someone thinks I look like a prat then so be it. No matter my concern for my own life, the point is that my horse doesn't choose to go out in the traffic and I have an obligation to protect her the best I can. She wears a chest strap, tail strap and leg wraps and I do also have a pink exercise sheet (which I haven't tried yet as not sure she will be too keen!). I wear a tabard.

Hopefully my Mum's horse will come sound next year and we will be able to take him out too. This means friends will be able to use him and I already plan that any friend wanting to ride him will also wear high-vis. If they don't like it, they can stay on the ground.

I wear a tabbard and BH wears a sheet and a breast plate. Since my friends horse buried her and ran out on to the road I have decided that both me and BH need to wear some just incase we part company.

Some of the people on the yard laugh and say how bright we are in a fairly sniffy fashion but I just ignore them because I am not stupid!

Also, BH looks dead fetching in his pink rug and pink breastplate :p :D

I only have a short bit of road work to do to get onto the bridlepaths, but make sure we are hi vis-ed up even for that.

I've just bought a hi vis exercise sheet to make sure!

Sorry, I wouldn't think much of anyone who laughed at me for wearing it . Woudl rather be seen than squashed.

I really don't get stupid people who laugh at others for trying to be as safe as possible! Idiots in my mind.
Would they laugh at a policeman for wearing hi-viz too?

[sarcasm mode on] I can totally understand how maturity and safety is a laughable topic, dahhling you should always be dressed in your finest for when you get mown down on the road, the thought of paramedics seeing you wearing a high viz is horrifying, it doesn't match anything! [sarcasm mode off]

I saw a lovely cob out at the weekend with blue scotchlite everything! Bridle, reins, martingale, boots, numnah and tail bandage and the rider was matchy matchy with her bib and ankle straps too. Looked awesome and I saw her miles off in foggy weather!

I always wear hi vis. Even offroad, so dogwalkers etc can see you and get dogs under control. I have hi viz leg straps and a tail thingy just incase I come off and the horse ends up on the road, she can be seen.

silly cow

I wore yellow tabard
yellow leg bands on horse
yellow hat band
and yellow whip ( of which i hit a car for leaving 1 1/2 feet between me and him )
also yellow martingale hi viz one

too many people think about their fashion rather than their safety

see so many ride out dark horses NOT 1 piece of HI VIZ

What we look like take it the pony now has a x rug to in pink

How absurd. If she wants to risk hers and her horses life than on her head be it, but to laugh at you is ludicrous! I always wear hi-viz, every time i ride, without fail, have done for years, I want to be seen and I want the horse i am riding to be seen.
It may not be stylish but I can be stylish whilst off the yard :D

Looking good. Can I ask where you got your pink boots from? They would fit right in with BH's look :D

I'll have to get a picture of him next time we go out. I want to get him a pink hat too. Do you know the ones I mean?

At the end of the day, after my car, BH is the most valuable thing I own. It's just sensible to look after your assets isn't it?!

Ah thanks F :) Might buy some as a birthday treat to go with the wormers I also bought as a birthday present. My life is so rock and roll!

I had two people laugh at me once when I rode out with them with my hi-viz top on. They were both on dark bays wearing dark jackets and I knew that by the end of our ride it would be starting to get dark. We had to ride along a busy stretch of 60mph road to reach the yard. What really annoyed me more was that they were both very experienced riders and were taking me out so that I would feel confident on my new horse. I couldn't relax the whole ride as they bounced along smoking, texting on their phones in the middle of the road. Oh, and one the riders trains kids on road safety in the pony club!! Needless to say I have never been out with them again and wear my hi-viz proudly at all times!

I always ride in my hi-viz and sometimes I dont even go near a road (lots of moorland rides here)
I never used to but a friend got thrown from her horse, seriously hurt and was knocked unconscious, her horse returned back to the yard and we did not even know where to start to look for her (pre mobile phones) the police/ air ambulance found her very quickly beside the riverbank because of the hi-viz vest she was wearing. She is fine now. but it made me think :O)
Even today wearing my yellow waistcoat prevented what could have been a nasty situation, I was out on the lane with Denny who was a little on his toes after last nights fireworks and a group of mountain bikers came round the bend towards us faster than I would have liked and they all managed to slow down and stop, as I passed one guy said '' just as well you were yellow or I wouldnt have seen you'' LOL

Its not a fashion thing, keep up with the hi-viz :O)
