so I got my puppy! his name is noah and is a long haired chi, fff so cute ;__; ♥

My cat isn't so convinced atm, very timid and nervous but her sister is alot bolder and seems fine - hopefully she'll come around eventually.

He is gorgeous:) Don't take offense at people's comments, generally they are just concerned for either the purchaser or the puppy. It is a very long time since we had l/c chi pups but I do remember that they didn't have as much coat as you would expect, and I do think Noah has more coat than a smooth coat (no offense to UnaB but smooths do tend to look like little rats as pups.:p)

It's thirty years since I had Chi pups and l/c puppies had fringing below their ears coming in by seven weeks and were obviously frilly by the time they left at 10 weeks. I go back to the days when you could get both in one litter before the registries split.

S/C chi puppies never look like rats! (Slugs perhaps but not rats)

I top you s4s, its 40 years since my mum had a litter of chis.:D You've answered one thing I was trying to remember as to whether you could get both in one litter, could a smooth occur in a litter with both l/c parents or did people interbreed? And apologies for the rats comment, consider it amended to slugs :)

He is young, 6 weeks.
I know it's not ideal you don't need to tell me, I've heard it all now! but I can assure you under circumstances I do my best and am giving him the best and am alot more educated.
I'm on a chi forum, they have been very helpful when I've had questions, hes been vet checked.

He is rather strong for his age and appears to be very happy! currently weighs 600g.
He is weaned no worry there, he has a huge appetite though mind you! and he eats happily enough on his own, currently giving him orijen puppy food, though I do syringe him milk & honey water now and again just to give him a bit of an added boost.

My friend also has his brother and an older chihuahua from the same place, so socialization bite inhibition etc which he would of learnt with the litter will be with them I hope.
But no at first I waas very worried, but now i'm confident he will grow up well ( touch wood!! )

Both of his parents were long haired, he appears to be going darker by the day in the places! and he clearly has white little socks and white top of the tail, so I wonder if he'llgo a light patchy colour?

Smooth is dominant so long coat puppies can occur in smooth x smooth litters but smooths can't be born to two longcoat parents. You can get in-between coats too that are not desirable.

Please allow me a head>> desk. Why support someone who breeds toys & lets them go at 6 weeks?

Not going to lecture you OP , sounds like you have had that already from other forums! The "breeder" should be shot for letting him go at this age, although maybe if they are so ignorant he is far better off with you. I'm glad you are getting lots of advice, it might be worth dropping a pm to UnaB, she hand reared a chi pup so probably could give you some tips.
600g is so tiny, my GSDs weighed more than that at birth:eek:, fingers crossed he continues to thrive, please give us lots of updates.
Thanks for the info re coats s4s.

Because my friends chihuahua who is lovely was from there, so when I noticed an advert and it was that breeder I went to look, I didn't know any better other than I was suprised at how young they looked, nor was I expecting to get one so soon but didn't want to mis him- if it wasn't me who had got him it would of just been someone else and they may have not looked after him as well.

I don't usually 'ahhh' over puppies, but he is seriously cute!

If Elsie wasn't so big and clumsy I would be tempted bya Chi, but she would probably sit on it and squish it :D She already falls over the JRT all the time!

Thanks for being honest Midi and you seem to be clued up, its breeders like this that make us so angry. They are obviously not bothered by the welfare of their pups to let them go so early and I do hope Noah continues to thrive.

Please continue to post updates and photos.:)

all tired out now from play lol.

It's very weird picking up my small cats after playing with him, they weigh a ton in comparison!

He is super cute!

6 weeks is not catastrophically young to leave his mum, 8 weeks is better, some people prefer 10 but 6 should be fine. If you have access to vaccinated dogs try to get him to socialise with other dogs as much as possible in the next 2-4 weeks and being so tiny means it is easy for you to carry him around to see the world until his vaccinations are done later on.

Now I am really not a fan of chihuahuas or indeed any toy breeds really but then is one seriously cute puppy! :)

Wonder why the breeder lets them go so early as opposed to holding on to them for just a couple more weeks?

More spam, sorry! haaha.

Im hoping I can get playdates with his brother often, so he has another dog his size to play with.

Congratulations - Noah is such a little cutie, look forward to seeing more piccies as he grows up.

A friend of mine has got a long haried chi and her hair looked quite smooth at 6 weeks.

aww how cute!

i want a chi but have two big dogs that would quite probably squish one!

I got my eldest at 6 weeks - she had severed separation anxiety because i smothered her as she was so young when she left mum - so treat him as a dog from day 1 (not a baby!) and he will be fine :)

My current pup i got at almost 10 weeks and hes an independent little sod - so imo preference!

good luck... he will be a bundle of fun im sure !:)

He is so cute!

Perhaps breeder couldn't afford to feed them for another 2 weeks - they must eat tonnes! LOL.

Whilst generally I would agree with you, chihuahuas are a bit of an exception. Most decent breeders don't let chi pups go until at least 12 weeks, and it is I think a requirement of some breed clubs for their members.

Yea most toy breeds 12 weeks is the recommendation.

He's seriously cute midi!

Ah I didn't know that about toy breeds. 6 does sound quite young then, but I hope he will be fine OP. I am sure he will really enjoy spending time with his litter mate.

I think you will find it is all about the money, as MM & Viszlak have said its recommended toy pups are not sold before 12weeks. I assume getting rid before then also means they are not so time consuming and costing the breeder money feeding etc.
