It was my birthday yesterday and my friend arranged for me to have a lesson with her trainer. He has competed at Badminton and Burghley and such the likes so I was pretty nervous and worried he'd think I was crap.
It was nothing short of amazing. I rode first, then he rode and told me all about the importance of getting your horse to move off the leg. He then proceeded to get K to work long and low and in a beautiful outline at walk, trot and canter using just his legs.
The upshot was that by teaching him that pressure of the leg comes off when he lowers his head is comfortable and nice and therefore a good thing for him to do.
Now, I have never used spurs before, but Jon explained that when used correctly, they are an effective way to back up your leg aid as tha is where the request is coming from and it will help K understand my request for him to lower his head easier for him to understand.
I then got on and had a go and the result was amazing! Obviously I am not talking about jabbing him the side, but gentle pressure to let him know what I want him to do.
I have worked really hard this year and this is the best result I've ever had. Everytime K did well, Jon told me to stop and let him think about things. I just loved it and am so pleased with the comments he made about both my riding and my horse. I am hoping my OH will post the lesson up so my friends can watch so if you guys are really nice, I'll post it on here!
