Today I am grateful to have such a star of a horse, he hasn't left the yard in probably 3 months due to the ground on our available hacks, the weather, the loss of my mojo, the daylight etc etc - today was gorgeous so I got off work early and took him out for a walk up the usually quiet road, then up round a field at the end and back.
Well it was sods law the second I left the yard, we had:
- 3 artics with air breaks, one as I was trying to do a gate from the single track road into said field
- 4 trucks towing big rattly loads, incl diggers and sheep fencing
- 1 4x4 with barking dogs in the back
- a horse joined us on the road and went through the same gate but a different way once in the field, and had gone through said gate about 4 strides ahead so I was dealing with that + gate + artic
- The field had cows and sheep in it
- Once we were in said open field and the valley opened up I realised it was nigh on gale force cross winds up there, which would be blowing directly up his @rse side towards home
- A horse having a hooley behind a bush along the fenceline on the way home
- 4 cars having an argument about who was letting who through and one getting stuck doing a 4 point turn in the road while we stood waiting in a puddle next to a house with workmen clattering around behind it.
- Kamikaze pheasants
He was rock steady if slightly sprightly throughout the whole thing, thank GOD I have a sensible horse it makes it so much more pleasant - I couldn't be prouder of him. He's lost a little confidence due to the break going out but he's still just a joy to ride. Two separate people even told him he was gorgeous on the way home, so I hope that made his day as well as mine!
