Well after 4 colic free months i was beginning to relax a little about my mare. She has had colic about 6 times in the last two years, one being major which resulted in surgery (March08).

Since surgery she had only had one mild bout, did require vet but was ok by time he arrived. This is the longest she had been ok and i really thought she may be over it and we had her feed/management etc. suitable for her..

O left around 7pm last night to go to my boyfriends, so mum did the late check. She rang about 10pm to say she was not happy with my mare, she had done 6 poos since 7pm! was sweating and rolling. Mum walked her in the dark and put a cooler on her and she was ok. My poor mum then had to check her at 1am and i checked her v early this morn and she was ok so fed, hayed and turned out at 7am as usual.

She is on v controlled diet, turnout and exercise and once again i can see no possible reason for this attack, so fear i cannot prevent another, it has been luck the last two times i have found her just as she has started colicking.

She is permentley on pre&probitotics, feed - balancer, handful of hard feed (D&H equine sensitive - for colicky/allergy prone horses) and hi-fi. She has her night soaked hay ration split so she doesn't trough it all quickly and has an adlib supply. She is turned out from 7-3 currently then wanders around stable area and small paddock before bed to help keep everything moving inside her! She comes in at 3 to have a rest and to ensure she gets plenty of forage. She is only in light work (hack or pessoa in walk, tiny bit of trot) due to all the time off from surgery and being diagnosed with mild kissing spine in 2 lumbars.

I would be very grateful to hear of anyone with similar problems, how do you help prevent attacks? Has anyone got a horse that has had surgery? Did you have problems before and after the surgery with colic attacks?

Sorry this is so long!

My friend's gelding had surgical colic when he was about 4, and she was warned at the time, that he would always be susceptible to colic afterwards. This has proved to be true! She has to be very careful about what grass he goes on. I think it is the adhesions which form post-operatively that cause the problems. Apparently big horses (he is Irish Draught) are more likely to get surgical colic. I presume this is because there is more space inside them for the guts to move too much and get caught up in.

is he wormed up to date! has he got friends! does he seemed stressed at all? they say fennel can help horses that are prone to colic!

My 7 year old mare had colic surgery in December and they warned me that she may always be prone to it... Leahurst phone me once every couple of months to see how she is doing, so it could be worth you contacting the surgery that operated on your horse to discuss it with them.

My 7 year old has not yet had another bout (touch wood), but ny IDxTB mare is prone to it

I have just started feeding her on Coligone powder, and had some tests done on her poo to see what was happening in there. It showed an imbalance of her gut and gave me lots of advice, most of which you are already doing: feed hay rather than haylage, feed a pro and pre biotic, feed Alfa Alfa rather than mixes etc...

Thank you everyone!

she is 15.3 and 7 years old.

Def no worms, she had an eliza test couple of months ago to rule out tapeworm, there were none. I wormed her for the first time since surgery about a month ago. We don't worm them that often, as poo pick everyday, cross graze and only my three horses.

babybells, No she doesn't get stressed easily, and last night the other two were completley quiet eating. Very quiet where they live. She lives with my other two horses they get on well. Stabled next to one another.

JetSet, thank you really good to hear about your horse. What tests did they do on the droppings?? That could be useful. I have only had contact with my own vet not the hospital maybe i could drop them an email so i don't disturb them!

Is she bedded on straw? could she be eating it? my 6 year old kept having regular bouts of colic which turned out to be due to him eating his straw. Unfortunatly he had to be PTS after a really bad bout.
