I Hate My Horses Name.....

I dislike my share horse's passported name and rarely use it. Unfortunately for BRC competitions they have to have the passported name for entries. I always put "please just call HIM Monty" (name is very girly so they all think he's a mare) on the commentator's notes but they never do!

My horse's name is misery in Spanish (which he can be!). Really dislike it so do call him something different for unaffiliated shows

My boy was called Willow when I bought him, and yes there's quite a few Willows out there, but I liked the name so never thought of changing it. However, a lot people say to me that it's a feminine name! Before the rise in popularity of calling girls Willow I never even thought of that. He has various nicknames that you couldn't give him if he was a mare, like Willy Wonka, Wilbur, Will de beast...
I'm standing by 'Willow' because I think it suits him. I don't like when people say to my face they don't like his name... especially when they haven't met him... he is older than Willow Smith, okay? Haha.

My mare is registered on her Welsh passport as Layla, which I don't really like personally. Her old owners seemed to vacillate between calling her 'Layla' and 'Lyla', so far Lyla has stuck with us, which is okay, I guess, I prefer it to Layla (also, Lyla derives from 'lilac', so I have a Willow tree and a Lilac tree, which is kinda cute :)). Never really decided on a better name for her so far, sometimes I call her Delilah which I like a bit better, I'm just not a massive fan of human names for horses! I know of a family with a daughter called Megan who bought her a pony called Megan, and never changed the name... :)

we knew we wanted to call the foal we bred "Just Amazed By You" on his papers, but spent several days trying to think of a stable name. eventually I suggested Jabu using first letters and that's now his stable name. : )

I've never changed a name on a passport but nearly always change the name we actually use. My current two were both known as something different prior to living with me. One I changed as she didn't respond to it at all and my husband had been calling her something else that she was responding to, the other when my husband found out what she was called he laughed and said no we will call her ... instead.

One I had many years ago I misheard what his owners called him and mistakenly called him something else for over 10 years. He then kept that name for the rest of his life.

At the riding school I went to as a child there was a pony called Sibba. It turned out his actual name was Silver but his previous owner had been very young when she got him, and hadn't been able to say his name properly. He remained Sibba for the rest of his life, which is quite sweet.

Our first two we had were called Sandy ( reg Sahirra) and Shandy (reg Nebo Gypsy), I hated having to call them both together. I named my next one as I bred her and she is Megan. Nice and simple. Since then I have Crugeran Celt, not too keen on that but haven't changed it although I call him Big Man as he is a chunk of a welsh d cob and the only male amongst my mares. My three minis are called Cefn glan Rosebud, Rosie, Pencarnan's Maya Moon, Maya and Pencarnan's Gwenllian, Gwen. I like all their names except Celt really but would never change a name especially if they are used to it. All mine seem to know their names.

Mine came with the name 'tosca' which I thought sounded too close to ******, so I've always called her 'toz'. However I got to appreciate her proper name over the years and actually have it tattooed. Unfortunetly I since learned 'tosca' is not a great word in portuguese, so my tattoo raises some eyebrows in portugal (would you know it OH is portuguese lol) :p

My poor mare had been in a different home almost every year for 5 years from what I've traced she was born and named Alice, this was changed to Aimee and then previous owners to me called her Daisy. She answers to monkey though! Like most Irish ponies she reacts best to pony.

Passported name stays out of respect to the breeder no matter how much I hate it. Stable name is just what you call them and it's so much nicer to call then by a name that reflects how you see them- and even if you are superstitious about name changing, surely a new nickname can't be unlucky as long as official name stays. I hate animals having people names cos you always end up knowing someone who ruins the name for you, so definitely have to change any people names I acquire. Anything else can stay if it suits or otherwise be changed.

I actually quite like having animals with human names - my dog is called Daphne, before her I had a Lester. Horsewise I have a Tracey, an Amy, a Rita, a Peggy, a Stevie, a Bill and a Cassius right now. It makes for amusing conversations when in public places when OH and I are talking about moving them or working them etc.!

I have changed the name of every horse I bought ! They have all been young though and I think it would be strange to rename an older horse for some reason. No bad luck to report! well nothing out of the ordinary
