I HATE SHOOTING!!!!

How awful for you. I would definately be out in force to find out who it was. I get mad with the organised shoots round us who stand stupidly close to our field boundaries shooting, they clearly have no respect whatsoever for other animals / people. We even had one lot who were trying to shoot birds over the fence on OUR land! What's even worse is that we used to have lots of ducks kept on our wildlife ponds which were OUR ducks and that they were aiming at. I remember coming across a shoot one day whilst riding a pony I used to have who was the sanest pony in the world (x highland) - they watched me come over the hill towards them along a track used by many people for walking, and then decided to begin shooting. Poor pony turned in a panic and put his front hoof through the fence getting is wedged. I was only a kid at the time all on my own, desperately trying to calm down my pony and release his hoof - they couldn't have cared less and nobody tried to help. They dont think.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

It sounds as though your family gave Jim a lovely long and happy life.

There are lots of good threads on here about keeping trespassers out of fields (as much as possible anyway) that you might want to look at later.

For now condolences and respect for having done the right thing by this horse for so long, right until the hardest moment.

Sorry to hear this about your old horse, RIP.

If you want to take this further it might be possible to contact the police to find out who was shooting. If we go shooting at night we always inform the local police.

I just want to say how terribly sorry I was to read that your horse was put down as a result of this accident.
I hope that you have many happy memmories of your horse which you will be able to look back on.
May I ask you to report this accident on the www.horseaccidents.org.uk web site as the statistics of accidents will help to demonstrate the issues that horse owners and horse riders encounter.

RIP Jimmy - Rascal, I am so very sorry to hear that your story has had such a tragic outcome.

Janetgeorge - holding thumbs for a full recovery for your young horse.

I am really quite outraged at reading these posts of yours. I just cannot believe that people can be so unthinking and insensitive. There is a shoot close to our livery yard and they have finally agreed to notify us of any shoots planned after YO raised merry hell with them. They seemed bemused by the fact that horses would be scared of guns... One afternoon my friend and I were out in one of the fields doing canter laps when they let fly with the guns in the next door field. Fortunately both our horses were as good as gold, but it did become quite a fast canter!!!

Thanks everyone, Jim was one very special horse and we all miss him. It hits you when you do 4 feeds not 5, and see his empty paddock. Knowing he is still in the cornerof the field helps, i dont think we could have watched him go anywhere else.

Jimmy was pts on friday, the vet said he had dislocated his hip and might have damaged his spine as well. He shared his feed with his friend Bramble and we left her in the paddock with him when the vet came. We still dont really know what happened but we assume the people shooting spooked him and he ran into either a fence post or the field shelter. The vet said it would have taken the force of a car hitting him at speed to do it, appart from that there wasnt a mark on him. He would have been 29 in april. We bought him from Bodmin moor as a very skinny two year old, hubby backed and schooled him, later he gave Jim to our youngest daughter who also had alot of fun with him. He has done a bit of everything, the best family friend ever. The vet was great, even called us friday night to see if we were ok. We let all the horses go and say their own goodbys, we let them in the paddock so they could see what had happened and not one of them has called for him.
Jim has gone to join my old pony Honey they were good friends.

I am so very sorry to read this rascal, you must be devastated, RIP Jimmy x

Rascal - so very, very sad, my thoughts are with you

JG - hope your youngster is OK and makes a full recovery

We have organised shoots around the livery yard and keep the horses in wherever possible. Give these guys a gun and they seem to lose all common sense and consideration for any animal.

Quite right they do. I have two weeks off work soon so we will be going past the field in the night, if they come back the police will be called, it seems its a common problem in that area, people shooting where they shouldnt.

So sorry to read this RIP Jimmy :( It sounds like you gave him a wonderful life, hold on to those fond memories of him!!
