Show jumping!

I just don't 'get it'. Loads of counter arguments against ALL of my points but this is my personal opinion.

Soooo much pressure on the horses joints. Too many chavs hammering their horses over huge jumps and finally... Just because.

Moan over.

I like it but I don't like how pressurised it makes the horses and riders.

Especially when you see girls with long blonde hair down to waist flapping about. If they fall off and horse steps in it......bye bye scalp!

And don't get me started on the kids with three ponies and if they knock a pole mummy has to get a new one or the mums or dads yelling from the side lines.

...at almost 40 years of age, I can assure you I am no chav! :p

My hat is also pretty plain, with not a fake diamond in sight....

So that blows your generalisation outta the water, don't it? :p

No worse for joints than hammering it round and round on tight circles on the false surface of a school though :p

Dressage is hardly better is it? Even more bling there and arguably actually worse for the horse physically.

And XC well that's just dangerous isn't it? Horses breaking legs, necks the whole shebang.

Hunting is just men in silly coloured coats murdering foxes

Racing, well, where is the skill in that. Just short Irish guys hammering horses.

We should all give up riding entirely :D

I have no diamonds either! Bit of paitent on my boots but its it! I dont have long blonde hair either and sure no chav! More a greebo if I am honest ;)

I was being very mean and stereotyping clearly :), I had just viewed another video of a giggling chav firing a horse over jumps which were clearly bigger than it would have liked, the fact that she had to whip it into the jump made me cross.

Apologies to all non chavvy sensible show jumpers who don't do nothing but fire their horses over jumps at a million miles an hour.

Show jumping horses seem to go on for years and years, so it doesn't seem to lead to soundness problems any more than eventing or hunting.

I think show jumping is much harder than cross country or even dressage, particularly when the fences get up to around 4 feet. You have to be precise, know how long your horses stride is, be able to count the strides between fences, know when to get the horse to extend its stride to make up ground, or when to shorten it to get it back, know how to do flying changes, and have the horse obedient and supple to turn easily and quickly. All this, and have a brave horse and one that doesn't like to knock down a pole, but doesn't get upset if it does knock them down.

Ha ha, fab thread.

So do I. Even as a horsey person i find watching showjumping more flipping boring than, er, darts.

I mainly team chase/hunter trials/hunt but recently had a bash at a show jumping clinic .... it was hard!! Instructor commented that I'm mainly a passenger and tend to aim my poor horse in the general direction of a fence and just say "go on then" :o Luckily for me he's very genuine and loves to jump but clearly more input/skill may be required from the jockey - and I seem to be fairly inept at the moment!! Completely different from XC - well duh, of course it is - but the balance required (from us both), completely different canter and shape over a jump and of course requirement to steer, has me a bit thrown :D

What I do hate though is young girls that seem to think it's a great life for their horse to go in the school and jump, jump, jump every day  I know it's not my horse so none of my business but this particular poor horse goes out there every day and just goes over one jump time and again which just gets bigger and bigger. Ok she's probably jumping 1m10/1m20, very good, well done, but over a single jump ... really, what does she think her horse is learning?? Must be bored to tears

Hmmmm, but if we go in the school, and someone has left a jump up....we might just venture up to it in canter and hop over...perks him up no end ;)

Lol my jury is out havent done any serious SJ in years but hoping to get the S pony to some indoor stuff over the beginning of next year to blow away the cobwebs although dont think it will be anything bigger than 80cms lol ;)

plenty of pushy parents screaming in a shril voice from the side lines and annoying small winey kids in dressage to......with their 'string' (normally about 3 or 4) of 'well schooled, but not by child them-selves' poncy push button ponies....... i smile inside when they come last in the class! :) it reminds me that i can ride!

i love doing show jumping courses for fun in lessons but thats my limit i could never affiliate as the only show jumpers i know (pony show jumpers) are the most stuck up cockiest people, i much prefer my racing friends!!!

i hate:
the overblinged hats/boots/rugs etc
That the show jumpers i know judge you on the price of your riding gear ad how tight fitting your show jacket is
The long hair flapping!!!!

but then again that is purely based on my experience of show jumpers i am not speaking for all im sure there are some very nice ones!

...but if you hate them, you don't wear the blingy...why do you begrudge those who do?

I'm not a fan but I don't give a hoot what other people do....

This is what I hate, others making judgment on the actions of others.

Sparkly hats aren't detrimental to a horses health if a rider wears a hat encrusted in them, so why get steamed over it?

Billie I know exactly where you're coming from with this. I love popping the odd jump, and maybe the odd cross country thingy, but when I tried to do a bit more (with serious encouragement from outside), I ended up with a seriously sore back from all the twisting and turning getting round the course, and Shy just ended up in protest by stepping into the middle of the jump and standing there

I think you can see his last protest here ;

This was when I realised I didn't really want to do it anymore so we don't.

ps - isn't he fab !!! hahahaha !!!

Ahh but it is the only truly objective horse sport you either jump the fence or it falls down or you dont jump it so no argument about the result, Showing dressage and TREC all have an element of subjectivity as it depends on someone to judge the style of what you are doing there is no black and white in it. Cross country is also pretty objective as again you either do or dont jump it

That made me laugh :)
