New horse has a cough noticed it on Thursday she had a snotty nose aswel got vet out he checked her said she had a slight temp and to keep her in at night gave her a course of antibiotics and ventipulnin syrup (not sure about spelling) and said it was probably down to new inviroment so snotty nose is gone she still has a cough how long should it take to clear ? I have two geldings and two mares need to separate them as the big 17hh gelding is beating the s*it out of new mare ... Shoul I put mares in one field and boys in another or boy/girl in one field and boy girl in another?
 
Just suck it and see so to say - Try it out not sure I enlist to the splitting the mares from geldings up camp.

The cough could just be from old hay or has it only just come one maybe stry her on hayledge for a few days or damping her nets can only help if shes not got dust aggrivating it.

Hope she settles in soon
 
In my opinion, when you introduce a new horse into a herd, there's going to be a few scuffles for a couple of weeks. After that, they usually settle down establishing who is boss! It might be worth trying to sit on the fence for a week perhaps??

Helping to ease the cough I would suggest soaking hay and feed, and ensuring the bedding is as dust free as possibly. (If straw, put a watering can over it maybe??)

My dogs caught kennel cough from boarding kennels, I took them to the vets and they put them on anti-biotics and told me to give them childs cough syrup!

Maybe you could buy some and put a little in your mares feed?

Have you any portable electric fence posts & battery? Maybe separate the new mare from the geldings, over a stretch of electric fencing, until they've become better aquainted. Hopefully they'll settle down and get along. One of mine (who's the most sweet natured of creature usually) has taken an instant and violent dislike to the Percheron gelding recently introduced. They're separated by an electric fence but 2 months on..... she's no more impressed by him. Miserable moo.
 
For what it's worth my opinion is that a new horse has to be kept separate for a couple of weeks so that they can all sniff each other over the fence. Then you introduce the bottom of the pack with the new horse, if they are settled, take out the bottom of the pack and introduce the next up, etc. until the leader of the pack is happy to accept the new horse, then they can all go out together. It takes time, but you are less likely to have problems that way.

If the cough persists you may need to consider what you are feeding (e.g. soak hay) and bedding (e.g. avoid straw).
