It was just not econcomic especially after receiving the exclusions on the new boy for front legs - due to racing injuries and skin - due to a nettle rash the day he was vetted it seamed little point. The two vetrens were only third pary, fire and theft (lol) but you would have thought they were down for vets bills as well !. I was paying £70 per horse for my public liability and found out i would be covered for any horse i own or handle for £56 (i cant remember exactly) from the BHS- this also gave me the same personal accident cover.

So called them today - they were very nosey and wanted to know the full ins and outs and they tried very hard to "blackmail me" but its cancelled now.

I have set up a direct debit to transfer the monthly premium I would have normally spent into a squirral account.

Your household contents insurance may include 3rd party, in which case no extra cover needed . . .

Insurance is so expensive and the insurer never seems to end up out of pocket, ie what they pay out gets clawed back somehow . . .

I only insure through the bhs now. If you weigh up how expensive it is it would probably be cheaper to get a loan for a vets fee should the need arise.

I also opted out this year. NFU have changed their exclusions cover and decided they were taking the mick.

BHS gold membership covers for 3rd party, as does the new membership scheme being offered by WHW.

I have cancelled all mine too.....for my dogs as well.....I was paying about £2.5k a year for 3 horses (2 of which do pretty much *nothing* and the other is 16), and 2 dogs......

.....just watch and wait for them all to have major problems!!!!!!

does anyone know if the BHS gold package covers you if some one else is handling your horse or it makes a great escape ie gate left open or something?

I am pretty certain it covers your *horse* regardless of who is dealing with them, but it doesnt cover the other person iykwim?

It definitely covers them if they accidently get out......

I have been pondering whether to do this.....

One old knacker has exclusions and is on high excess vets fees but still manages to cost 30quid a month, the other costs me 80 quid a month yet somehow I always end up paying vets bills because they are about a tenner under the excess......makes you wonder if its worth it.

Might join the BHS and get the essentials covered and simply pay for the rest as and when....

I cancelled one of my horses insurance cos it was a lot of money
( circa 800 ) and the only time I needed it they slapped on an exclusion. My vet made reference to looking at a lump on his fetlock in her annual confirmation of treatment form and they decided to exclude his front legs

He is a field ornament and very temperamental to the point where i've had to retire him, and i've decided that because he won't let you treat him he will be PTS if he has anything major.

Sorry if this is a dumb questions but I have just moved over from Ireland and I was under the impression UK horse owners HAD to have insurance becuase you were automatically liable if your horse caused any damage, whatever the circumstances. I have a 23 year old mare who is only used for light hacking. She is never sick and the only problem she has is arthritis, which her insurance does not cover. I would happily cancel her insurance as I resent paying out and then coughing up for every vet bill as well. Can some one clear this up for me?

Well you all have more luck that me, Horse Insurance is the one insurance I have made money on and thats adding up all the insurance I have ever paid for my horses.
I've had tack theft claims and a lot of vets claims and a loss of use claim.
Last horse alone ran up nearly £15K of vets bils, don't forget colic ops can now cost over £5k.
I just wish they'd pay out more for vets bills now as the prices keep increasing but the limit seems to stay put at £5k.
I admit they are tightening up a lot but I guess they have to as I fail to see how they can make any money out of it.
I will say the old lad who I claimed LOU is only covered for liability through my BD membership but that's because no insurers would cover him for much else.

With exclusions if you give it a few months then get a report from your vet you can often get them removed complelty or at least restricted to something very specific.

On top of this I pay £50 a month by DD to my vets to try and keep up with everything. I guess I just have no luck.

I've just taken the vets cover off ours - left death and Public Liability / Personal Accident only.

We worked out that my lad (20yo) owned since 4yo has cost £600 in vets bills since I've owned him - his insurance premium for that time (at todays prices) would have been £4,700

- would have bought me a youngster - tbh as he is now 20 I'd be extremely reluctant to put him through a colic op anyway

OH's mare is 16yo, excluded front legs (which were injured when she wasn't insured anyway!) has cost £80 in 3 years, premium at £25 a month = £375

We have just set up a standing order to a spare card account we have paying in the same amount.

We have agreed though that when I finally buy another youngster we will insure it for vets bills just until we know where we stand with it - esp if colicky type or accident prone
