I have failed and to auction he must go, am so sad i could cry, I aquired a 13.2hh pony that was other wise going to be pts, through no fault of his own, he was being ridden by a 9 yr old child in a 3 ring gag,which he hated and used to evade, (bolt). Since we have had him we have put him in a happy mouth snaffle and has been ridden by an older more experianced child and has not put a foot wrong, he has xc, jumped over 3ft (scope for more)possable BSJA prospect, fast enough for Prince Philip games, lovely pony,flying changes, walk to canter, and a school master for a confident child. I have tryed for 12 weeks now to try and sell privatly, cheep(imo) but just not had any calls, he is a bit quirky but i put this down to the fact I think he has been beaten up, (nervous) but saying that he has learnt to trust us in a short amount of time, loss of grazing is forceing me to sell him, am I a bad person sending him to auction??anybody any ideas to help this little man, as I think he could easily be misunderstood, or he could be some childs pony of a life time, any ideas please and chocs if you got this far

No your not a bad person, but send him to a decent sale such as Malvern and put a reasonable reserve on him to keep the dodgy dealers away! I sold a lovely horse there and it made top price and i still keep in contact with the owners now, he lives like a king.
 
Or try Project Horses. I know lots of people who have bought and sold via there. At least you stand a chance of getting someone sympathetic and with their eyes wide open buy him.
 
It's a great shame if you take him to a sale because all the trust he's now got will disappear overnight.
I would advertise again on adtrader which is free or project horses and drop your price even more.
Someone will buy him if the price is right and at least you can then assess the home.
I cried the last time I took one to a sale some years ago (I can hear some dealers on here laughing, I know I'm daft) but the look in the mare's eyes haunts me to this day, as she had obviously been to one before in her life and knew exactly why she was there. Now I would probably euthanise her in the same circumstances (two of the horses she foaled were near impossible rides by different stallions and she was unbroken herself and therefor unsaleable any other way). At the time I couldn't afford to do anything but sell her..
Your pony sounds as if you could find a home for him, please try first.
 
What about a loan, esp. if you're not talking a lot of money to sell? Would give you peace of mind and some control.
 
Price is almost always the deciding factor for potential purchasers, therefore I would drop the price if I was you.

No you are not a nasty person taking him to auction, you have to do what you have to do - but I could never do it to any of mine; and definitely not to a previously abused horse.

Don't send him to auction, he will be bewildered and will more than likely end up in the wrong hands. Could you not just drop the price and advertise on free or cheap sites and put ads in feed / tack shops etc? Or as others have said try project horse. We just bought a 13.2 pony cheaply because she was considered too flighty for a kids pony and was showing the white of her eye a lot but she has really settled down into work and my daughter loves her to bits. There will be someone out there suitable for your pony, but probably would have been kinder to have him pts originally than to do what you have done and gain his trust again and then send him to auction.
 
My friend has just sold a pony very cheaply (£400) through www.thehorseexchange.com
He was a quirky pony but has gone to an experienced home where they are prepared to put the work in and they have kept in touch. She didn't think she would be able to sell him but everything is sellable at the right price. I would bring the price down and give it a bit longer, at least you will see who the potential buyers are. It would be terrible if he ended up with the meat man after all the work you have put in.
 
Thank you all for your sugestions most of which i have tried, this weekend will be the last chanch i will have to sell privatly, and will be taking him to a show sunday to see if he can muster any intrest, I will put a reserve on him in the hope to deter any ropey dealers at auction, fingers crossed.
 
Don't send him to an Auction..
Put Ads up in Tack shops, feed stores, riding schools, livery yards, horse magazines..
You will find someone for your special pony, just not in an auction house.
If he got into the wrong hand [ie. A kill buyer] you will never forgive yourself.
Not a wise idea in my eyes. I hope you find the right home for him. After all, all horses deserve someone to love them!
 
at an auction you have no say in the home he will go to, he could end up anywhere, he has started to trust you but he may never trust again, i couldnt send mine to auction i love him too much.
 
I know fo someone who was looking for a 13.2hh PC pony as child has outgrown their 12hh one. Don't know where you are though?
 
I wouldn't send him to the auction. It would be far to cruel on him as you have already just started to gain his trust it will completely ruin anything you did have and the poor pony could go anywhere! He was probably better of with the child you got him off?

If you have lost your grazing is there no other fields you can rent? Theres always somewhere you can put a horse/pony or loan the pony out for a while to then sell him on when you have eventually got somewhere theres always loads of people wanting loan ponies so im sure he would be snapped up extremely quick quirky or not! I loan a quirky little mare so theres always someone out there for ponies you should find somewhere else to keep him tbh.

I will not go into the whys and wherefors of why this pony was not best left with his last owners.

loaning is not an option, Due to a past situation, and once bitten twice shy.

My keeping him is aslo not an option as my child is to big for him, and we have other horses to care for,

Are you sending all of your horses to auction then? Or have you found the rest private homes?
 
No i am not sending all my horses to auction, the ones that i have got, i have had for a long time and are with me for life.
The pony i am talking about basicly was going to be shot! and for no fault of his own as we have proved. We have no room for him at home, he is on livery but this was only a short term arrangement with the YO, I cannot justify taking this pony into the winter, He just needs a chance, and I will try my best to give him that, as i have said I have put a reserve on him which i think will put dealers off, and If he doesn't sell then I will have to cross that bridge, and rethink,
 
Where abouts are you? My friends daughter is looking for a new pony. She is a fab little rider and my friend is very knowledgable and doesn't mind them quirky but she never has much money to spend but he would have a fab home!
 
Kicking myself, was about the only site i didnt put him on, he has a lovely jump, a bit more experiance and he would make top pony, when he has jumped like this and i have gone to pat him, he has gone so tence like he was expecting to be hit, makes me wonder why and what has happend to him in past.
