Just bought one off ebay and it fits my cob like a dream, I am so happy. Really nice quality leather and perfect for the roly poly types. Much cheaper but just as good as the native pony saddles. Just thought I would share, as I know how difficult it is to find a saddle with all the right qualities and that fits these native types.
 
Hi , that's good to know as only yesterday I was looking at a flyer for GFS saddles and thought they looked lovely and pony no 3 needs a new saddle .

I have an older GFS saddle for my horse and yes I agree its lovely, comfy for us both.
Im currently looking a little half heartedly as he's out of work for a saddle to fit a Connemara. Maybe GFS would be one to look out for.
 
Really? I had an older event type saddle fitted to my pony, gave him si, hock and back problems. 6 months crippled. Would never let one touch his back again! I find them very hard underneath and dont mould well.
 
I have a gfs haflinger for my haflinger, it does the job, he's very difficult to fit, i'm not sure the leathers all that though, it's a bit bate's like in it's quality
 
It just shows how different cobs can be in shape, I see plenty of GFS and other makes that are supposed to be good for flat and wide shapes, that don't fit well. And I shall leave it to our Native Pony customers to be the judge of whether they are "just as good"!
 
I'm sure Native pony saddles are better. They just don't ever seem to come up second hand ( which presumably is because owners choose too keep them rather than sell on) so for people on a bit more of a budget it's not part of the choice?

I totally understand! It is frustrating for people on a used budget to find our saddles, so yes of course, good to have possible alternatives. But that's not what was said :). I am always happy to help people find the right used NP saddle from photos etc, and often it does work out, you just have to have time on your side as well of course.
 
Does anyone know if the gullets measure similar to the thorowgood or wintec ones - is an xw in the gfs range the same as an xw in the wintec for example?

I had a lovely gfs pro show working hunter that I sold because it was too flat and wide for my horse, thinking she was going to stay the shape she was - lo and behold she has widened up again and I wish i'd kept it. I did make a decent profit on it though...

I've ended up with a wintec dressage which I had to have reflocked owing to how hard it was, but I still don't think it is wide enough - I always fancied another gfs, especially a leather one.
 
I bought a brand new GFS VSD saddle, not a cob one, and hated it. Fit was ok ish but I thought the leather was awful and v cheap and nasty.

Sold it at a big loss and bought a second hand Ideal saddle, beautiful leather and definitely higher quality product.

Weird isnt it how experiences differ!

I have found the wintec gullets are wider than the same ones in the thorowgood. My mare is a wide in the wintec and extra wide in the thorowgood. She is a medium wide in the Pessoa.
