Went for a ride the other day with a friend on one of our usual routes. We came to a gate which is a bit tricky. It comes back on you if you do not have a firm hold. Friend went first and I followed. Rufty helps by pushing gates with his nose. He did this but before I got hold of it to push it completely open he went through and it came back on him. Consequently he went through at a great rate of knots and I came off .I landed on my back and knew I had done something to my ribs. After a visit to A and E I found out I had broken a rib on my back. I have never known such pain. My other half was not pleased as we were going on a 4 hour plane journey the next day. I managed it but literally can hardly walk or bend. I was not wearing a body protector and I am sure if I had done so I would not be in such a state. I have an old horse who normally never puts a foot wrong. I became too complacent. Sorry about lack of paragraphs but for some reason my computer will not let me do them

What a horrible accident, I hope u feeling better soon. Just goes to show how something as simple as opening a gate can end up so painful. I have no idea how u managed a plane journey either the next day! How long before u can ride again?

Oo ho.. Welcome to the injured club. When I fell a few weeks ago my first thought was " oh **** my husband is going to kill me" We were travelling to Ireland a day later on Ryan air. Landing, or should I say falling from sky with bump! Was interesting and very painful as I'd hurt my SI/ sacrum.
I'm pretty useless at opening gates and usually left it to someone else. Hate the ones that swing back so you have to get hold of them before they return and squash you.
I wear a body protector always when I hack out. Just as well as otherwise I'm sure I'd have broken ribs to go with my bruised and strained knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and wrist! So highly recommend a BP. Mines very comfy and does bit hinder my riding in any way. Xox hope your pain relief is working .

Don't beat yourself up about it. We all do things cause we know our own horses, you didn't do anything wrong.
Hope you heal up soon.

Hi, hope you feel less sore soon. I was knocked of mounting block when plaiting sons mare, she was spooked when someone went past lorry she was tied to and car backfired!!! I hurt my left hip and shoulder and though hip is ok now the shoulder is still stiff and sore, and this was 6 wks ago, so I feel for you.
