I have just popped my head outside my front door ..........

Blowing a hooly on Dartmoor, but then again it always does,
and lots of rain, the river dart is about half a mile from where I live and it sounds like a train passing all the time, so that will be well up and the canoeists will be out tomoz. nutters!
 
It raining and blowing a gale outside in South Warwickshire. Supposed to be like this all night and into the morning then the wind to die down throughout the day.

My friend rode and got wet this afternoon then put my horse to bed so I could have the day off so I hope she is nice and snug. Luckily she is stabled in a big american type barn so when the doors are closed there isnt too much of a problem with the wind.

I cant decide whether to turnout in the morning or just keep her in and ride in the afternoon when the wind isnt so strong

blowing a total and utter gale and raining like stair rods here.
My dogs inform me with some certainty that they cannot possibly go out in it as they will get blown away!
 
it's awful here tonight in berks just watching news and weather it's going to get worse tomorrow oh joy....glad i'm not working phew!!

Oh well they have just said the worst storm of the year tonight...ggggreat, i also remember that awful storm back in 87, it was just dreadful

Hope everyone's property/stables/shelters/horses etc are OK...
 
im on top of a mountian in wales and it is very windy!!!! open fire is on but we can still feel a draft!!!
its not raining at the minute but it was really bad late this afternoon, just in time for my DR lessons and i got soaked!!! hope tomorrow is a better day

Wild out there. Morning of 16th Oct '87 I woke at 6am and thought they had dropped the bomb. Walked to work in the City. Meltdown started on Wall st in the afternoon...but most of the dealers were stranded in Essex so nothing cd be done....Freaky times....there's a bit of that vibe around now...........

[/ QUOTE ]I had a farm on top of Reigate hill, prettywell the highest piece of ground the hurricane hit, and right in the centre of its path. Met office calculated we had plus 160 mph winds (cos their anemometer on top of the post office tower was reading 160 when it was torn out by its roots)

. The wind curved up through essex as you say. Very freaky times,hard to explain,but as the wind gets up I still get twitchy.The oddest thing was the behaviour of my livestock, the day before. All my sheep trooped off the common and int the barn. Normally wild horses couldt have made them do this(and my horses could get pretty wild ,rounding up sheep).
 
Lived in Horley in 87, but kept horses in Reigate and remember walking up to the yard the next morning, as so many trees down and was first up to the yard, which thankfully the six oak trees had fallen around rather than onto. We had 16 oak trees lining our garden and only 4 remained. Although I slept through the whole thing.

We actually lost one horse in the following big storm, in Jan 89 or 90 when the winds hit in the day when a tree fell directly on top of her, killing her instantly, the worst part was they let us off work early so I went to the yard and with a couple of others that where there started grabbing all horses in, but between trips the tree fell.

Was also in the Caribbean when we got hit by both Emily and Ivan and that truly was scary thank goodness we dont get anything like real hurricanes here, what we had in 87 was a side swipe of a Category One.

I didn't get my first pony til 1988 so missed that horrific storm as far as equines were concerned.

We lived next door to a park in those days and I remember the world looking flattened when I arose in the morning.

There was another storm after the 1987 one, 1989 or 90 as 'scally' says.

My pony was stabled and I had to climb over a row of Scots pines that had all fallen over across the drive. Luckily no animal, person or building was injured by those.

It was a terrifyingly worrying night though.

Cant believe weather today, 3 go out in winter paddock at mo which has been a mud bath for last 2 weeks so decided to keep them in today with rain that we were having this morning, also kept 2 shetties in cause their field was completely flooded (stream had major over flow), thankfully the fields where the other 4 shetties were in was relatively dry, but am wondering whether they should have been bought in tonight cause winds are supposed to come up to 60mph and even though they are fairly sheltered there are a lot of trees, fingers crossed they will be ok.

To try an explain how much rain we had this morning I have lived in my place for 9 years and this the first time I had rain water seeping into my kitchen.
