I nearly lost Islay tonight.

I took Islay and Flick both down to the yard as usual and took them for a walk before doing Bob (my horse); some idiot walker had left the gate open at the bottom of the big field, so they scooted through into the next field and were looking for bunnies. Islay was oblivious to me calling her, and Flick just followed Islay like a little shadow! I went down to the next field after them....they still ignored me...then they went over to the river. I watched them running up and down the bank as I walked over, still calling them, then they went round the corner and there was a splash....

I ran over and found Flick on the bank, but no sign of Islay. It was about 5.15pm so nearly dark, and I was looking for a black dog in a black river...... There was a barbed wire fence around the river and my coat got caught on it as I went through it, so I was fighting to get free. I finally got through and managed to catch Flick before she disapeared, I could see Islay in the water doing doggy paddle desperately against the current and whimpering. Just as I was about to go down the 3' vertical bank she was swept around a tree trunk, and managed to get onto a ledge on the edge of the river although still in the water.

I secured Flick on two leads and went down the bank, and had to drag Islay out by her collar. The weight of her pulled me down the bank so I nearly went in too, and she was a complete dead weight, she wouldnt move. We ended up wedged in some tree roots just clear of the water, with her on my lap refusing to move but she was too heavy for me to lift up the bank. In the end I just had to shout at her, and smacked her on her hindquarters, and made her struggle up the bank to the top. I managed to climb up myself, got stuck in the barbed wire fence again getting through, and had to cross two fields again to get back to the car.

I took my sweatshirt off and wrapped her in it as we walked, although she was still looking for bunnies despite the fact she was shaking with cold! I also phoned the vet as I walked to the car, who said that they didnt need to see her unless her behaviour was odd later on this evening.

We got home ASAP with the car heater on full blast, and I put two coats on her as soon as she got back into the house plus turned the heating right up - whereupon she demanded and ate her tea!

She seems to be fine now, although obviously I will keep a really close eye on her tonight. I phoned my mum who was more concerned that I might have fallen into the river - but as I said to her, I could never have lived with myself if Islay had drowned.

Sorry I am blithering on because of the shock or something - alls well that ends well, but please be careful of your dogs and rivers, I seriously have never been so frightened ever in my life before. Thank God she is OK

That must have been really scary - I'm petrified if I lose sight of Reuben when we're out! Fortunately, he hates water but he does tend to run blind and we are close to a river. Is dog okay now?

I've been in that situation before on the beach when my dog was caught up in a wave it was so frightening not to see her head for what seemed like minutes but was only seconds.

So glad you are both okay

She is curled up on two duvets still wearing her coat, looking very smug

I am beginning to come down from my shock but I never want to go through that again
crazy.gif
- I am terrified to let either of them off the lead ever again

Hopefully I will get over that fear, or they are going to have very dull walks!

Thanks both

I have just had some tea and I think I might be having a medicinal drink or two tonight

Islay is still looking happy and smug, the little trollop, but she will be being spoilt for quite some time yet I think

So happy to hear that all went well Acolyte.

I've had dogs that would run after anything with fur that moved (except cats!) and I never felt calm letting them off the lead. And it's rather typical for some/most dogs is it not, scares the life out of you and then once safe, they act as if nothing have happened!?

Well I had a neighbour that said "You should run for your life at least once a day." He had some theory about that it reminded the body about that it was alive and kept you in full vigour.

Otherwise I've seen you can buy these made for doggies

oh no! im pleased you are all ok, i have to say although we can sit here now saying its a very dangerous thing to do, i certainly would jump straight in to rescue mine so well done! lets hope shes a bit more wary of where she jumping next time!

OMG! Glad you are both ok - all our dogs (labs and spaniels) are water stupid and will insist on jumping into any kind of water regsrdless and it scares me silly everytime! I was going to suggest you wrap her in a blanket but she has clearly got you wrapped around her paw as she is snuggled up in 2 duvets!!

Thanks everyone - if I am honest it never occurred to me not to go after her, I just couldnt watch her drown

But I was lucky, and everything was OK, so phew

I have just been on the phone to a friend who has suggested that my dog walking kit should now include arm bands, a rubber ring around my waist with a duck on the front, and a rope slung over my shoulder, just in case I have to go near a river again

Perhaps Finnish Lappunds idea of a treadmill might be easier, the dogs could chase rabbits to their hearts content and would never leave the safety of the back garden

Bloody dogs are a nightmare. Glad i have to keep mine on extending leads (although i do look a complete t**t running through the park *chasing* squirrels).

I thought Islay had died when I pulled her out of the river, she was such a dead weight... but she is here now, happily licking the Sudocreme off her belly where I tenderly covered over her grazes and enjoying the fuss

Bleedin' lurchers, mine is no better, once he's seen something I've lost him for ten minutes. The last time he went, he came back bleeding from a hind leg having got caught up in barbed wire, and then laid himself down full length ina stream to cool down!

I hope you and Islay are feeling better this morning. I had a similar terifying experience last year when Buffy fell down a drain shaft, just like you it was dog out of sight then a splash, heart stopping. I so feel for you, a word of warnig, don't be surprised if you find yourself thinking about what might have happened if you hadn't got her out

I still have moments when awful visions flash into my head, and I am still a a bit paranoid when walking them, they never go off lead if I don't know the area I am in. Hugs to you and Islay. x

Oh gosh, everyone's worst nightmare although sounds like you were more upset than Islay. At least you are both safe and well at home now and lets hope the little terror has learn't not to frighten mum. x

Poor Acolyte and Islay!!!! I hope you have got over your ordeal, just in case i think you need to have ANOTHER wee dram (for the delayed shock!) Obviously Islay would need one as well and as doggies don't like whisky you will have to drink both!!!! Seriously though, thank God you are both ok, give yourselves all a big hug - you deserve it for your heroics!!!
grin.gif

God how terrifying! I could feel your panic as I was reading the post.

Many years ago my mum and I were walking along the river bank with her dogs and my beagle pup and the pup kept poking his nose over the edge into the swollen water. No sooner had she said the words 'if that dog goes in the water I'm not going in after it' then the pup fell in and she leapt in after him like an olympic diver before I could even react! I nearly peed myself because her skirt was billowing round on the surface and she was so cross she was purple. She handed me the pup and I shoved him up my jumper and hurried home before she could see I was cracking up. She still gets cross now 25 years later

God hun how scarey - reminds me of before xmas when it was icy - Jack jumped onto the lake and I heard a crack...I swear my heart was in my mouth.

Thank goodness it ended happily - I'm sure she won't milk it for too long x ha ha

Sounds odd but I was absolutely exhausted today, so I took half a day off work! My mum thinks it is post-dog-rescue stress disorder

Islay is absolutely fine of course, and has been making the most of all the extra fuss, favourite food, etc etc
