I have never been so upset

Ive never failed a BHS exam- thats not why I said I thought the BHS exams 'narrow minded', just that all horses and all riders are different, what works for one may not work for another, and its beneficial to learn about ALL methods of dealing with/riding horses, then when you have plenty of experience in everything to do with horses you have more tools at your disposal to use with difficult, or young green animals.
You can get to AI stage with BHS exams only having ridden schoolmasters and never have ridden a young horse

the horse did not pass the exam, you did your very best and made the sound judgement that the horse was not up to what was being asked of it, you now have the confidence in your own decisions, this is a very important point in riding and training, being aware enough of whats going on to not predudice the performance of the horse.

i think you should have been given a horse up to the job, and am of the opinion that horses should normally be asked to jump only in canter.
.

Only jump in canter? what rubbish! Why do most showjumpers train gridwork from the trot then? And most use a cross-pole at trot as the first jump!

so i am not entitled to an opinion which is purely personal ? but you are entitled to insult other people, good that!!!!

We-ell, it's an unusual opinion (as far as I'm aware) and it would be interesting to know your rationalisation for it?

I've tackled many a fence from trot... Don't some xc trainers advocate approaching small fences in walk? I'm sure I've read that in CR... And then there's Ferg's jump jet manoevre which is from gait entirely unique to him :D

We'll I agree partly, not all jumping should just be done from canter but most horses do tend to find it easier and most riders can sit better to the jump when in canter.

OP sorry to hear you are so upset. I can imagine when you put in so much time and effort and don't have masses of opportunities of taking the exam must be very frustrating.
Why not just enjoy your riding you really don't needs the BHS to tell you what you know you can do yourself!
