I recently bought a Connemara pony as a project. However I have since found out that his microchip number and his passport don’t match. I have been in contact with the Connemara Pony society in Ireland who asked me to get a sample of his hair for DNA Testing which I did, I’ve had the results back today and it’s NOT his passport and they have no record of his microchip number even though it’s one of their microchips.

They have said that they will do a general search on the database to see if they can find out his parentage but that will take another week.

Has anybody else had anything like this happen to them?

I love him dearly but am beginning to wish I never bothered taking him on.

Can you trace back through previous owners or ask for more information from the person you bought him off?

Oh just had an update!

The lab have found a breeding match at the same age that the vet said his age was. They are going to arrange to find out what happened to his passport and arrange a new one to come out to me

Excellent news.

Out of interest how much does it cost to get a DNA sample checked for breeding with the society? I have a connie who came out of ireland unpassported and would love to find out his breeding if at all possible.

thats great!

what can happen with microchips is that the vet implants them, gives the paperwork to the owner to complete and send off and they never send it off so the chip is never registered. However the society should know what chips, in batches, they sent to which vets, therefore it should not be hard for them to contact the vet practice and get them to search their data base for the chip as vet should have written it down and entered onto notes. Having just said that it depends how old your boy is and if said vet practice was inputting computer records then and still on the same system!

To be honest im not sure how much it costs, as i havent had to pay anything as of yet because they had no record what so ever of him they didnt know if it was an admin error or something else. I expect i will get a bill through the door when i get his passport.

My pony is 6 and fully registered but could only find out that through DNA testing and not through the microchip as they have no record of that chip number.
