Hi all
I have setup a new livery yard I have a 5 year lease. I have done all the necessaries with the hmrc and insurance
Does anyone have any extra money making ideas to do from a livery yard?
Also how many POo pick fields, or don't bother and just chain Harrow after rotating grazing?
All advice welcome 😊😊

Hi firstly can I insist that your yard is near me!!!???
As for poo picking and earning extras I've been on a few yards so will give you the ideas they had:

Some didn't poo pick but just harrowed, others left it to the liveries but this just ended in arguments as there's always those who do more than others. Current yard charges each livery a fee and the YO does it.
Extra income can be for jobs, clipping, plaiting, general livery jobs. Plus charges for use of solarium and hot shower, massage machines. One yard charged for floodlighting too, 50p in the metre for 30mins.
There's also transport, fees for storage of horse boxes, trailers, caravans.
Hire of arenas for individuals or clinics etc.
Good luck with your venture!

With the poo picking\harrowing, it depends on how much grazing you have and if you have enough to rest the fields.
If you harrow you need to rest for 2-3 months to keep the worm burden down.
Harrowing is much less hassle as you won't have to chase liveries and it will fertilise the field for you. The fields won't look as pretty though.

Making extra money: The usual - Holiday care, turn out\bring in, mucking out, plaiting, clipping, waiting for the vet\farrier etc. Although you may find your liveries prefer to organise this amongst themselves. You could organise competitions between the liveries, or hire out the facilities. Make sure your insurance covers you though.

I was on one yard where the YO would do a weekly feed\hay run to the local merchant. She would charge you the cost of your stuff plus 20% for her time and effort\fuel. I didn't use it often but it was handy if I had a particularly busy week or wanted to go away at the weekend (and had run out of stuff).

The big washing machines aren't too expensive these days, so you could offer a rug washing service (to non-liveries as well as liveries).

Run clinics where you book the instructor and charge per person to earn a % on top, like horse agility etc.

Even set up horse agility courses and hire it out to others

Hire jumps out for the school, or xc jumps in a spare paddock

Rug washing/numnahs

If you have lots of spare acreage you could run shows, not just for your yard

Again, depending on land rent some grazing out for sheep, will keep on top of your worm burden as well

A little bit of a curve ball but.....if you have enough land, securely dog proof fence a little paddock rent it out to people. These are really taking off all over the place. Also hire the favilities out for dog agility
