Some of you may know that i've wanted ferrets for ages. Well i'm polish so we celebrate christmas on christmas eve and get our pressies then too :D and i have just recieved a letter from santa ;) that i'm allowed to have 2 ferrets, all the expenses for them and food and accessories are going to be paid for by ''santa'' :D eeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!!! I've set my heart on getting 2 from the rspca as there are enough of them there to have a good choice of what i want plus, they will be healthy and neutered/spayed, and i just want them to have a lovely home rather than buy from breeders. I'm so excited! Was thinking of getting a polecat coloured one and a silver one? And about 6months old so that they're not total babies but i can still see them grow up :) Haven't decided whether i want a jill and a hob or same sex pair? I'm so so so excited! :D I wonder what pony and dog will think of them :D
Any other ferret owners?

These are Coco and Lydia, both separate rescues - I've had ferrets since I worked for the RSPCA and was known as the mad ferret lady :o. They will only eat Chudleys ferret food, and are so clean and smell free it's fab. AND they spend ages playing with the dogs.

When we went away in July, they were boarded in the office of a cattery (in their own cage), and apparently people were absolutely amazed by them, and would go back to see them ! Ferrets that have been handled properly from birth are like having permanent kittens. I adore them :)
 
My son had a ferret, when he left home she was re-homed to a friend of his, she was a lovely little thing & not too smelly though we called her 'stinky'!!

My kids had two rescues from the RSPCA. They were absolutely fab pets really clean and great fun. My daughter took hers into school once and the class thought he was a baby bear! He would fall asleep upside down in her arms. Lovely animals a little odour but as neutered males not too bad.
 
Girlies do smell less than boys (even when neutered) but can "skunk" if frightened - quite rare tbh. They always wipe their bottoms on the newspaper after using the litter tray. The key is to clean them out every day, and skip out during the day if you need to. i think a lot is down to diet too.

Lydia is like a HUGE bear at the moment - her winter coat is amazing ! She must have doubled in weight too. Coco (brown nose) was very ill this summer, but has rallied round to doubling her weight now too - no idea how old she is but her teeth are brown and "snaggled" when she kisses you.
 
31????!!!!! :eek: :eek: :eek: omg :D i'm thinking of getting 2 jills i think :) was thinking of calling one flo and one indie, but if they already have names and are used to them then i'll keep their names :) i'm hoping that they will get on with my dog but not annoy her too much cuz she's 9 years old and slowing down slightly, so might have to be in separate rooms while they're out :) i have a question, well 2 actualy,
1. shall i wait untill after new year to get them or get them now?
only reason is because i thought that the stress of new people, new house and on top of that new years eve and fireworks might be a bit much, but am i just overthinking it?
and question 2. how hard/easy is to get ferrets from a rescue centre?
because to get a dog it is ridiculous, so i'm wondering what the procedure with ferrets is :)
any other advice greatly appriciated :)
 
Where do you live? As i know of a very good rescue centre in Kent. Ferrets are easy animals but there are a few things that are important to know, like their diet and the fact that jills need to be mated or jabbed to take them out of season (when they are in season) otherwise they could die-unless of course they are neutered. Yes the RSPCA are fussy, I've had a few from there and am not impressed as they are not particulary good with ferrets anyway. Lack of experience mainly. But if you have the correct knowledge and suitable enclosures you will pass their inspection.
 
I'm up in Lincolnshire unfortunately. Well, my dad has had ferrets when he was younger, and we have an indoor cage for them that has 4 levels, levels are solid plastic with slightly rubbery top so that they dont hurt their feet, dont slide but its easy to clean, the ramps are like mini horse ramps with wood and rubber, we have 2 hammocks and bowls that attatch to the mesh so the furries dont tip them everywhere and a high corner litter tray. They'd be let out when we're home and have free run of most of the house under supervision only though. We also have an outside enclousure for their warm weather house, its a garden shed with levels inside, with a cat flap and a big run outside with a tree to climb but only to a certain point, up to where the mesh is, we've also dug mesh under the ground so even if they dig they can't dig very far and can't escape. Do you think that sounds as if they'd be happy with it?? We do have a 9 year old dog but she's a mini poodle and usualy sleeps and doesnt bother with other animals :)

There is Lincolnshire ferret rescue, near Grimsthorpe Castle. She was very helpful and has some lovely ferrets. I shall see if I can find the site.....
 
I am an RSPCA Pensioner (a young one I know) Inspector. We went to adopt Lydia from the local RSPCA, and it was really weird, and very upsetting tbh. I know they have to go through a rigorous process for adoption, but I had my pension paperwork with me, and it was ME that used to take ferrets in for another RSPCA home where I worked...all they had to do was make a call...

But no, we had two homechecks and all the rest, pay full whack, and it was ME teaching this poor homechecker about bloody ferrets :o I was really peed off - these animals need homes, and yes they have to be so careful, but........

So for Coco we went to a mad ferret lady rescue (I love em !), put Lydia in with her to see if they got on, they loved each other, paid a £5 for her (I snuck her a £20 donation too), and that was it. And this time she DID bother to look at my pension paperwork. She even commented on how trim Lydia's claws were - that makes you a good mum in the ferret world ;)

Oh no :( I've contacted 2 branches that are near me, hopefully they'll like us? If not, any ideas of how to go about finding a local ferret mad rescue lady? I know of a cat rescue lady near me but not a ferret one :)
Any reccomendations of ferret rescue centres within 40miles of Grantham, Lincolnshire? :)
 
Hope you manage to find some ferretts soon. They are fabulous pets. I have 5 at the moment, Billy, Nancy, Snowy, Belle and Silver. None are from recues i have always got them friends. I have ferrets for several years now and love having them, they are so funny to watch when they are playing, your set up sounds brilliant i'm sure your ferrets will be very happy there.
 
we're in the process of ferret proofing the house but i'm sure they will still find a way of getting somewhere where they shouldn't be or stealing something they shouldn't steal :) but tbh, i'm looking forward to it :D
 
Lydia (The Exploress) gave us a complete seven days nightmare a few years ago. She got into the washing-machine room by accident. She scaled up the sides of the washing machine, onto the sink, and then managed to get via the boiler (no idea how) and into the boxed up bit above it - and through it into the cavity walls :eek: This is a four storey town house.

I heard the "shuffle" and new we couldn't have mice in the cavities, went racing downstairs, and yup, Lydia was missing. Cue seven whole days and nights, hearing her shuffling around on various floors, me trying everything I could think of to get her back - it was a dreadful time. i used to do this for a bloody living, and now my ferret was dying. I thought we would have to listen to her shuffling until she died. I was devastated.

Finally, I had an idea - hubs sledgehammered a brick out of the garage wall, and I pushed a blanket through the hole so it would reach the floor on the other side, bated the hole with pilchards (she hates them but would have been so hungry, she's have come to look), and voila !!! next morning there she was, the thinnest, most pitiful girl ever. She must have found water, lost weight, and been able to get out if she was stuck .

Five days later, she passed an elastic band - she must have eaten it thinking it was a worm, and somehow it didn't get tanlged in her intestines :eek:

trust me, ferrets can get into, and out of, anything, any time - and a ferret always wants to be where a ferret isn't ;)

ps, I feel awful for having said about what happened to me with the RSPCA, but it did. The centre's you will be contacting are nowhere near me, and I would go for it. So many unwanted critters get put down. xx

I have two hobs (Tim & Trevor), they are not neutered and they are bit whiffy. They are in a run inside a stable, I take the run out in the summer so they are in the morning sun (which meant they spent most of this summer with webbed feet!). I would start off with a pair of jills if you haven't kept ferrets before. They love to snooze and you can buy some amazing accessories and clothes!

i have contacted 2 centres already, i emailed them because couldn't get through to them when i rang. i do know that some rescue centres are ridiculous with their expectations, i dont know if you saw my story earlier in the year when we tried to get a great dane from a rescue, they wouldnt let us because both parents worked and despite telling them that we'd have neighbour come let it out in afternoon and a dog walker, they still wouldnt let us have him, they wanted someone in the house most of the day, which is ridiculous because how is this person supposed to afford a dog that size if they dont work? either way, the poor lad sat in the rescue for 3months in the kennels and i checked on their website every day, one day he wasnt there, so i can only guess what happened to him :( he wasnt in the happy rehomes page either :(
i'm gonna give it a go with a rescue, if they are being ridiculous telling me that i have to sit at home and watch them 24/7 then i will get some from a private home. :)

My girls have the "Pink Hearts" set :o:D

I've just taken some turkey down for them, and Coco ran back upstairs refusing to look at it, and Lydia has taken it all out of the bowl, and stored it under the ladder in the cage (just in case). No matter what they are tempted with, they will only eat Chudleys Ferret Food.

I do like those! but my accesories are all red, cuz my fave colour is red, both dog and horse have everything in red too :)

my dad was telling me about his ferret and what she used to get up to when he had her, apparently she was obsessed with stealing cutlery, especially forks, she's go into kitchen, climb into draws, grab a fork, leg it to her hiding place under the wardrobe and if you didnt catch her in time, she'd bend all the teeth in the fork and repeat the whole thing over again :D she also loved grapes, but she would carefully take it off you, put it in the middle of the room and dance around it for about 15min untill she settled down to eat it :D
