I havent rugged my clydesdale yet, am I cruel

As title, horses just been let into 75 acres ungrazed all year, cant feel her ribs, has pony nuts and hi fi and garlic daily, play hay when in, but now feeling guilty i havent rugged her.....in all this rain......
 
No, honestly don't feel cruel. Our shirexcob has no rug in stable and only a lightweight (ie no fill) on when it's wet and windy but is otherwise naked and is fine, has got a wooly bear coat of his own. Yours has certainly got plenty of grazing and if he's anything like ours I'm sure your trying to get some weight off before the spring!! Xx

No you're not. My welsh section a mare is unrugged all year round unless it gets seriously bad. Otherwise she has shelter both natural and man-made with ad lib hay and vits and minerals- she's perfectly fine and still has plenty of flesh on her.
 
Farra is now rugged, but she was full clipped a week ago. Prior to that she was without a rug apart from her no fill t/o as our field is muddy and she is a hippo with hairy legs.

Her coat was nice and thick and she was plenty warm enough. She is young, well fed and compared to where she was living in Scotland, Essex is nice and warm.

She is now wearing her 200 fill rug unless it goes above 9 where she is changed to her 100 fill rug, the same for Stinky as both get itchy skin if they are kept too warm. I have a 300 fill rug for if it goes below 1.

As long as there is shelter in the field like a good hedge or field shelter so they can get out of the worst of the wind and rain, a clydesdale will be fine - unless of course it was old Cairo who hated being wet and cold and lived for his rug and stable - he was a TB soul in a big hairy body.
 
We haven't rugged our Pecherons yet, they take 8ft rugs and I need to get a couple for when it really gets cold in Jan/Feb, they don't feel the cold ... they are half hippo, half yak's!! :)

ps: Anyone know where to buy 2 x 8ft rugs? :confused:
 
You wicked wicked woman!! Most people are obcessed with rugging horses often unecessarily. I'm sure she'll be fine and it sounds like you are feeding her sensibly.

I was thinking of having some made, all of the rugs I have bought for them are way to small for them now, they are growing out as well as up .... they are huge!:rolleyes:
 
Could your Clydesy have a word with Jake please (Clydesdale x cob) he was freezing the other night, then god forbid had a flint in his foot and was lame for three days; on the first day he dangled it at me, watching from a friends field he was fine!!!!!!!!! He might as well be a TB. He needs to toughen up big time!!
 
My lass wont be rugged again this year at ( unless if ness and ill etc) last year she was out in all snow no rug and in at night no rug - a girl on yard checked her one night wnehwas minus 8 and she said wow she was so warm. Shes sec D grows woollie coat and if temp drops below minus or snow on ground she gets extra slice of hay for internal warmth. she drops the weight she piles on in summer and comes out of winter looking good - rugs are good and needed for some horses etc but mmmm sometimes i suspect that we ( myself included here before I sat back and thought ) rug because we feel we should not cause horse needs it :) and no thats not a critism at anyone :)
 
well i am a more cruel owner, my clydy cross has a chase clip and no rug..............trying to get weight off...................the ambition is to find ribs..............i know they must be there some where are they keep the saddle up!:)
