Just been nosing on Horsemart
I'm not wanting another horse, but like to have a peep now and then

Came across this fella, and it made me a little sad. I hope at his time of life he finds a loving home. I would take a look if i had my own place bless him. Just for him to settle down in, for his old age

What a lovely sounding horse ... they have spent a lot of time and effort explaining what a nice chap he is .... I really hope he finds the home he really deserves

SUre he will find a good home-
He has all the virtues
We took on 17yr old and had 10 good years of an easy life wiht him.
Although he was On Loan as owner did not want him to be passed on , but be wiht her or us for life.

I agree. If he is good to hack then a happy hacking home is a real option. Its a shame he jogs a bit as this could put someone off. It wouldnt put me off as i like a bit of sparkle but it might put others off. But there must be other people like me!

Agree with you pete, the ad is nice but there is something hiding between the lines somewhere
frown.gif

Would still love to go and get him though,,,, wether it be to hack, or retire. Although it looks like there's life in the old dog yet
wink.gif

If any one on here buys him, i would love to know. He looks like such a nice boy

I wouldnt at 18 as it is only just over middle age. Why PTS? If there was something wrong with it then yes so would I but if it could go to a home where it was going to be enjoyed then I would do it if I couldnt keep it.

if you lend me the 950 i will have him and keep him- just dont have the intitial out lay!! ( cheeky bugger aint i!!!) does look like he has life left.
Will also say to the poster above (sorry dont remember you name!)
if I need to seel Flint again and its in 3 years time when he is 18- I am sorry to say I will have him PTS, he deserves better

I know what you mean. But he is not that old really! Ideally you would want to find someone you know to take him. I know if it was me I would want to be absolutely sure he was going to the right home. Or I wouldnt sell. But I am in the position where I dont have to pay for livery and have a lot of pets!!!LOL!!!.

If he is sound and genuine then he could find a good home. If not then he will fall into the hands of dodgy dealers. Hence like I said, if he is as they say then yes i would pass him on if I had to. If not, then I would PTS.

It just seems wrong to PTS a perfectly fit horse because of personal circumstances.

If he was closer I'd definitely have him! What a lovely lad he sounds. They've gone to an awful lot of trouble to describe him & are going to vet the home so he should have a good chance.

I hate to see older horses up for sale
If they are school master types they will be ensured homes for many a year, but what then?? There is always an end of line.....

If they are lucky they find a last home, and that is for life, but if not, they go from home to home to market, to god knows where.
My last horse, came from a dealer and before that the sale ring. He had many physical scars to show for himself, but the mental ones ran very deep. He had major issues but we came close to dealing with some of them.
For this reason, when i had to make a heartbreaking decision of letting him go, because i lost the financial means of keeping him, and because of personal reasons. I let him go on loan. I couldn't bear to sell him, in case he ended up in trouble again, and hoped that one day i could have him back.

It was not meant to be, and 3 months later i said goodbye at Liverpool equine hospital.
So.... much as i hate to say it,,,,, i agree with kidalton

So although max is only 15 (today.... happy birthday mate xx)
If it came to it, i think i would rather have him put quietly to sleep, knowing he was happy and loved, than worry about where he ended up.
I know he would give someone many years of fun, and look after them, but i wouldn't want to think of him ending his days in misery.

If in doubt.......

The chestnut in my siggy is the horse i said goodbye to
Aged 13. The pics were taken the day he was PTS, he looks so happy and healthy, and i could have advertised him, and got myself some money.
the ad would read something like:
"17.3hh chestnut gelding. Gelderlander X
Hacks alone and in company, first or last. 100% in traffic Snaffle mouth, never strong
Loves to jump.
Has some handling issues so needs understanding owner
very sad sale of this wonderful horse, blah blah blah"

forgot to mention he was a wobbler, therefore a danger to himself and others, but when i let him go on loan i didn't know that. He went downhill when he left me. His life eneded there
So had i sold him, what would have happened to him??

gone a bit off track, sorry, but just hate to see horses of a certain age for sale, when they should be settled. somehow ponies seem different (don't shoot me) they give kids endless fun and experience. They are sadly outgrown on numerous occasions and then retire in some ones field getting fat and being patted.
Horses seem a different story. They are not outgrown, and at some point someone should say, "thanks old mate, that's enough for you"

Climbs down off soap box

Oh my god... let us know how you get on! Thats great! If i was nearer i would certainly have a look, my old boy is 18 and he looks better and acts more lively now than when i got him at 6!

Exactly! And he would have a good home! For life no doubt! Thats what I mean, there are genuine people out there. People who just want something to enjoy but dont need or want the worldbeater.

Apologies if I offend anyone with my opinion and stress that it is only my opinion.
I struggle to understand people putting healthy horses to sleep for fear of where they end up.I take on board issues people have with age but does that necessarily mean that once a horse becomes aged it is worthless.
If a nice home can be found for horse say 18+ years then why PTs, I simply don't get it.
Surely a horse can suffer if it has unfortunately been sold , given away to a buyer regardless of what age, yes the odds are higher the older the horse gets.

In my ideal world and I know it doesn't exist, horses should live out there lives peacefully andto be loved and we need to give them every chance to do this. I'm sure there are homes out there for a grand horse like this.

Again this is only my opinion and not raised to cause a fuelled debate, if you agree you agree if you don't you don't.

I got my mare when she was 16 to say she was a handful is putting it mildly! lol typical chestnut mare with a huge dollop of attitude!! and today at 28 she still has the attitude and lets me know she is my boss and makes me tow the line!!! She is retired and lives a life of a pampered princess... he could probably give another 8-10 years of joy to someone.

I hope he turns out to be what you want.

I took on an 18 year old and we've had loads of fun together. He's an ex-eventer and was fit and sound enough to compete in local shows for the first few years. We now have a quieter life - he's 24, but he still enjoys gentle hacks out three to four times a week. I have just bought a youngster and although I find it difficult financially the old boy is going to have the best life possible until the end of his days.

The previous owner loved him and never wanted to sell him but her change of circumstances had forced her to give him up. I had him on loan at first but when she knew I was the right person for him she sold him to me for a nominal amount. I am so pleased I was given the chance because he's turned out to be the best horse I've ever had. He has given me and the previous owner so much pleasure he deserves a good life in his autumn years.
Anyway, what I'm getting at is that if he'd been PTS because she was worried about his future he would have missed out on some extra fun and a home for life.

Older horses can give so much and although they get stiffer and you have to give up riding them eventually, it's still a pleasure to look after them and to know you can give them the best life possible.
