I just don't like pellets anymore

I've used pellets for some years; have flirted with others during that time but have always gone back to pellets as they're the only ones that don't break my back every day.
I do think it makes a huge difference if your horses are stabled most of the day too; mine are out all day usually but if they have a duvet day for any reason I certainly notice the difference then also if there's a damp atmosphere, that makes a huge difference to how they look and handle too.

Like 9tails, ten minutes tops for me too. Put one on straw to try and that was a nightmare; took so much longer and smelt much worse too, now got him back on pellets, much easier. Have tried some micanthus and have found that worse unless I was just going to use enough and sweep out each day; it doesn't seem to absorb anything.

Not read whole thread, but yes, I tried and hated pellets too! My Cushings horse is very wet and it just turned to horrible, brown sand-like stuff and I was putting down about 6 bags a week! I think it was also itching him when he lay down as he kept itching his bum/ nethers which he stopped doing when I changed the bedding.

I think it's not which bedding is best it's a case which bedding suits your horse. Pellet bedding suits my horses as they are pretty clean & quite easy to muck out. Horses that are very mucky & wet & churn their beds up are not suitable for pellets so you have to try other types until you find the right one.

I tried them years ago & only lasted a few months, hated the brown looking bed, however kept them as a base for a deep litter bed & they were amazing for that, had bed of shavings & hemp based bedding on the top, mega absorbent with nice to look at bedding on top!

Love pellets. My horse does gigantic poos, but doesn't walk them in thankfully. He also pees a lot, but always in the same place, so I tend to take the wet out each day and pick up the poos.

He's on EVA mats and even though the bed isn't especially thick, it still looks fresh and neat, and I put a bag in each week. Two if he's been in longer.

Done shavings with mine, and where I worked. Hate them! Also done straw - he ate it! I haven't tried miscanthus, but I don't need to.

I have a very wet elephant and in the summer when he was only in for a few hours they were fab.....roll on winter and they are awful, so hard to muck out abs just go brown and horrid.
Back on savings but I have put a sprinkle of half soaked pellet where he wees and that's helped, so far on bale of shavings and one bag of pellets a week.
