I had my horse Robbie put down this afternoon.
He wasn't a worldbeater at anything, he bit me more times than I care to remember, and he could have a dirty stop at a fence, but to me, he was the best horse in the world, because he was mine.
Despite his grumpyness, he always seemed to know when I just needed him to let me have a good cry in his mane, and he took me point-to-pointing, hunting, hunter-trialing, and we even went to London together, so I could ride round Hyde Park naked, for charity.
We also had a go at a showing class once, but the less said about that, the better.
He had been fully retired due to lameness for about 1.5years, and while he seemed quite happy to be a field ornament, his lameness had been getting worse.
After talking to my vet last week, I made the heartbreaking decision to let him go, while he still looked well and had that spark in his eye.
So, this afternoon, I cleaned him up, fed him about a ton of all his favourite things, and at 2pm, in the glorious winter sunshine, he went to sleep for the last time.
I miss him terribly, but I know in my heart it was the right decision, at the right time.
Rest in Peace, Robbie's Adventure.
