If you don't own a horse, does it not make you feel that you are not part of the horse world? It was a comment made to me recently by a non horse owning friend....she felt this way I found odd....just your thoughts please as I am curious:)

Definitely agree with your friend. I share a horse, and feel removed enough from 'proper' horse people because of that. In the months between losing my last share horse and finding this one, I felt completely detached.

Whenever you meet a horsey person, the first question is, "What sort of horse have you got?" Admitting you haven't actually got a horse relegates you to the sort of person who thinks they can ride because they went on a half-hour trek once. (Or possibly that's just my coworkers.)

In my horse-less years I felt well out of the loop. I'd attribute it to being not a 'born into it' horsey type, and therefore the majority of my friends aren't horsey people, therefore when I was without a horse I had no contact with the horse world.
Now that I finally own one after not having one for 6 years (2 months and counting!)
I still don't feel that into the horsey world, but again that's probably because I'm not out and about yet with him and I'm on a small private yard so don't have a network.

Suppose it depends what you class as the horse world, doesn't it?

I share and I don't feel out of the loop but then I've never had any interest in competing and so I'm quite happy that my horse world consists of a small yard with a lovely bunch of people and a very chatty WhatsApp group! If I'd been very competitive and had loads of horses previously then things might be different.

The only time I sort of feel it is when I'm out fence judging (which I was doing prior to getting the share, and that was my sole contact with the 'horse world') and arrive at briefings to discover that the whole marquee seems to have been to pony club together :D The automatic assumption there seem to be that you must be involved in competing at BE to want to volunteer at the events but people aren't deliberately cliquey about it or anything (to touch on another current thread), they just take it for granted. Everyone is always v friendly!

I had no horse when I was working with horses. I always felt I got a funny look when people asked me which one was mine and I had to say none of them. It was probably in my head but used to feel like I had to justify why I didn't own my own.
