Anyway fuelled by last weeks successful first winter sj outing i trundled off to BSJA at Golden Cross today all bouncy and happy....i knew this whole looking forward to show jumping was too good to be true!!! PLan was to do BN and move up to disco for first time....

Warm up was very wet so didnt do much and went straight in. Jumped 1-8 really nicely and i was actually enjoying myself until last fence, no 9 was a red double. In short he slammed on brakes and i flew off.

He hasn't stopped sj for months and i dont think ever unless he's been genuinely scared of something or i make a big mistake. He doesnt just stop for no reason. Went out to warm up and jumped fine

Watched rest of class and lots of horses were stopping, backing off, jumping sticky and having poles at that fence. Dont know if the light was odd or they could see something there we couldn't. It was into the corner and along edge but nothing spooky etc as far as i could tell.

I decided to go back in HC and again he did 1-8 really nicely and i retired before the last. I know i should maybe have made him go BUT i know my horse and that just wasn't him. He was more than happy over others so obviously something weird about that fence. I was happy to finish on a positive and be able to come out again another day feeling confident. I also didnt trust myself to be able to ride it 100% after falling off either, its not that long since i wouldnt have been able to go back in ring at all after a fall tbh. Obviously didn't do disco as it clearly wasnt the day to be moving up a class!!!

Anyway i'm sore a fairly pee'd off (glass of red is helping

), why are horses always 3 steps forwards 2 back?!?!?!?!

OH bought me these pics to cheer me up as i was in a proper grump!!! Kind permission of the lovely Spidge photography people who are forum members and were more than happy for me to post them.

So i'm firmly back in the 'i hate show jumping' club and i wont be lured out again easily

lovely pics (love the 1st one) hopefully there helping along with the wine for the soreness

Shame about the emergency escape I’m sure he was only trying to save you from the goblins that hide under red doubles hopefully next time out they won’t be present and he’ll be back to being a pingy jumping blue pone

Ah poor you, sounds like could have easily been a clear round if it weren't for that double. I wouldn't get too disheartened if lots of others were having problems, sometimes they just see something we don't.

Well done for going back in the ring. I had a bit of trauma the other week, but carried on and finished the round.

If its not my day I would rather go home and regroup for another day.

Pics are great.

langside - Or he was trying to feed me to them!!! I did land in the middle of the oxer!!

t_e - yes nearly. Annoyingly there were only 3 clears in the class but i think a lot of problems came from that double!

og - maybe 1 baby step forwards and a massive minus step would be more accurate!!

mickeymoo - its annoying that falls are E's at BSJA!!

love the 1st and 2nd photos

what a shame about that double
frown.gif
but he must of seen something odd about it, like the other horse, because like you said, it isnt in his character to stop, so it must if been the fence/lighting or SOMETHING at fence 9

...try not to get too downheartened about it...we all have bad days. but well done on going in again HC after your fall
smile.gif
its good to end on a positive note.

xx

kat - thanks! It's my left shoulder which is pretty sore so my wine glass lifting arm is fine!!

mandymoo - that's what i'm going to put it down to i think. I'm going to go out again next weekend and try again, i want to jump a flippin disco!!!

I was wondering what had happened. However, he looks awesome in the pics (as do you!) and that fence sounds like it was causing havoc. Don't panic. You guys are making SO much progress, so go for your disco next time!!

Hey, he looks sooo cute in your photos!! Sorry to hear you didn't have a successful day but as the others have said, it must've been something funny about that fence, especially as he jumped everything else so lovely!

Well done for going back in after your fall - I know how hard that is! The first time I attempted 1m10 with Caff I'd fallen off in the JO of the Disco at the first fence!!

Toughest SJ'ing thing I've ever had to do but knew if I didn't go back in I never would!

Hope you're not too sore and enjoy your wine!!

Thanks saints_fan...i knew if i didnt go back in today i'd be worrying about it for days and make it into a huge issue in my mind. Like he was throwing in the towel etc etc....but at least i can put it behind me and kick on next week!!

Lovely photos
grin.gif
he looks nice and keen so shame about fence 9
frown.gif
Hope you're not too sore and well done for having the balls to get back on and go round again
grin.gif

well with a little face like that there must have been monsters under that fence...no other reason for it
smirk.gif
seriously though, i know its frustrating but there must have been something if its totally out of character- sometimes something isn't quite right and we have to listen to our ponies and believe them, sure next week he'll be back to normal
smile.gif
oh and what a nice OH for buying you piccies. mine won't even come to a show with me

If it's any consilation none of mine have ever gone well indoors at GX, I think it's a tad tight and spooky with the gallery and exit etc. I've had lots of strange rounds there in the past and never think of it as a good venue purely due to my constant bad luck there!

Really lovely pics - just keep on looking at those!

A couple of months ago, at her first Intro, one of mine had an incredibly uncharacteristic stop at what I thought was an inoffensive fence and I came off. Similarly to your experience, lots of people were having trouble at that fence - stops, having it down etc. Luckily as it was BE I was able to get back on, jump it and finish.

I was a bit worried for next time out but kept telling myself that it was so unlike her (first stop SJ in over 2 years!) and trying instead to remember the rest of the round which was fine. She went out next time and did a lovely clear - stopping never entered her head (although I think I used a bit of extra leg!!) so phew for that, and that stop was well and truly a one-off that is behind us.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that once in a while it just seems to happen, you'll probably never know why, but you've been doing so brilliantly you can just pick up from where you were and carry on as if it never happened.
Good luck for next week.

That’s the sprit!!!!!! I’m sure it was just a very tiny blip! Get back out soon, it will very quickly be forgotten, I’m sure! Horses, don't you just love them!?!
grin.gif

My first jumping pony (many, many years ago) looked the spitting image of your lad. Seeing your pic's has brought back some very fond memories thank you :-)

I'm sure your fella was just having an off day . . . just keep up the work and all will come right in the end.

Best of luck :-)

Bad luck and hope your arm is not too sore now.

I went to GX on saturday too....much like yourself, in a very positive frame of mind after a very good outing 2 weeks before...only to fall victim to the gremlins that lurk inside GX dark and murky corners lol! I think your decision not to jump the Disco was probably the right one....as there was only one DC in the whole class...and round a course that 'looked' very straight forward
shocked.gif

Never the best idea to fall off at a fence that the photographer is aiming his 11 frame a second camera at ;-) Glad your OK if a bit sore. Having seen the fall up close and personal I can understand why you might be a bit stiff. Glad you got some pictures you liked and we got rid of those you disliked. Good luck with your next outing.
