Well, the last few weeks i've had a niggling feeling that Rocks hasnt been feeling comfortable in his back. He's been stretching loads lately - like when i pick out his feet he stretches out his legs, and about 3times a day he stretches his neck and back right up. Everyone I mentioned it to said yeh thats normal but I knew it wasn't because in the whole 2years i've had him, hes never done that.
Then XC schooling as you know he was struggling to jump the drop down into water, he would either plop his front legs in then plop his back legs in, or cat leap (and i fell off!) and thats just not like him at all.
So I rang my physio and she came today....and his back was completely misaligned (and i've done the same injury believe it or not, see post in soapbox)! She said it was caused by a pulling back injury - and about 2weeks ago he got his head stuck under the lorry (yes i know, my horse isn't the brightest crayon in the box!) and pulled back, breaking his headcollar - she said thats almost certainly what caused it.
She also said this injury would have been the reason he wasn't jumping drops properly last week - because his back was out he couldn't jump down steps etc properly. She also said it was the reason he was stretching alot. Coming back in amonths time.

So there you go - everyone at yard made me feel paranoid, even my mum, but there WAS something wrong and I knew there was. So guys trust your intuition, I know Rocks inside out so can read him well and i'm glad this time I took action rather than ignoring it, even though there were only little signs.

Both off us now signed off for a week with our backs lol what a pair!

All I can say is well done, most people would just pass it of as the horse being stubborn, and whip it till it did it right, you obviously love your horse

At least you have your answer..... Sounds like you will both benefit from some time off!! How weird that you both have back issues at the same time!

On the 2 occasions my horse has been unwell with a bug (out of 7 yrs) I KNEW there was something wrong with him.....even though everyone else thought I was being ridiculous. Both times he has ended up needing vet treatment as he had got worse. I know my horse inside and out....just like you.....A subtle change in behaviour does not go un noticed.

I also agree that "Most" people wouldn't - but I know a HELL of a lot that would I must say. Infact earlier in the year Rocks started putting in stops and wierd jumps BSJA - I was told by everyone to give him a beating - turns out he was falling ill with his breathing problems. I'm glad I didn't follow their advice.

I disagree. 'Most' people would not 'whip it til it did it right'. You are obviously moving in some very strange circles!

Either that or my horse is lucky to have me!

I would never use the above approach you mention without using my brain to evaluate possibilities.
