Toby Toast-Bengal x Bobcat so not a dog but a Cog.
You lot are the wisest on the forum so that's why I'm posting in here!
I am not scientific in any way, shape or form so I am easily confuzzled.

Toby has been classed as an 'Exotic Hybrid' by the vet. Some googling has shown that the Bobcat side of him has mutated in such a way that vaccinations can actually kill them. (Google Pixie Bob as thats the closest form of bobcat breed the vet and myself can find)

Due to this having him castrated may also cause a problem as the vet is not comfortable with usin anaesthic(sp) on him. I want him done as I do not want to have a Tom in the house with The Egg nor do I want my cat to cause problems-or in fact help the idiots round here that would breed anything to make a few quid!

Would it be fair to have him done under some form of sedation or is this a tad cruel for a small (ha-he is a giant) kitten??

Sorry it's not doggy but I need sensible advice!

Gosh what an unusual problem! I have no idea what would be safe, but might it be worth getting in touch with specialist vets, maybe vets who work for zoos or with wild animals, who might be able to help? I don't mean to disparage your local vet, I am sure he is great, it's just that it sounds like a question for a specialist.

Pixie bobs are not related to Bobcats - just a myth to sell the breed a bit like the husky x shepherd "wolfdogs".

Castration can be done in seconds so sedation and a whiff of gas can be used.

Sorry, have no specific advise, but can you investigate the options of a specialised Vet - it may be worth speaking to the Royal Veterinary College to see if they could recommend someone.
There must be an expert in this field somewhere who at the very least could advise your vet?
Hope you find a solution

I know that he is not related to bobcats-the bob cat bit is because he has no tail-just a 'bobtail'. It's the fact that PixieBobs react to meds thats worries me!

Oh, don't worry about knocking the vet lol as good as he is, it worried me when he called all the others in to have a gander when we were getting microchipped!
He had no idea what he was and came up with the Exotic Hybrid tag.
Bub's loves Toby so I just can't take the risk of saying go ahead. She was devastated when Gump was killed so risking TT is a no-no!

as far as I'm aware the chemical castration injection is only a short term solution. the newer implant that can be used long term and lasts 6 months at a time I havnt heard of being used for cats, only dogs. But I might be wrong.
