I know, I know, I know....

I have to admit that is lovely and I am getting lots of Facebook posts constantly shouting about how we abuse our horses, wish there were more posts stating how well the majority of us take care of our horses and love them with every fibre we have.

The pony is adorable and clearly loves what he’s doing. I always marvel at the kids riding with their feet on top of the stirrups rather than finding leathers that are short enough.

However, I cannot get behind such a big heavy bit in a mini’s mouth, or for something that harsh to be in the hands of a kid. Sorry, scroogey comment 😂

Theres loops in her reins in both photos. Its a western thing. Huge long shanked bits and no contact. Not sure its any worse than a snaffle with someone hanging off the reins TBH.

I agree snaffles can be harsh but with the weight of that bit in a mini mouth, mega tight curb chain and long shank it is very difficult to be light. Even with loops in the reins the pony is gurning, which he doesn’t do in the videos of him in a snaffle. To me that suggests this is a big and severe bit in a mini pony and even the best of riders would struggle to make it soft.

There are moments on the page of the kid hoiking the rein to turn (understandable as she’s a little kid) and while it is entirely normal in barrel racing to have massive shanks, wire or chain mouthpieces and the like, the fact it’s normal doesn’t make it pleasant IMO. I would love for western to move more into friendlier bits.

I’m not meaning to turn this into a debate but if the other threads have taught us anything, just because something is normalised doesn’t mean it’s ok. Still I agree the pony is cool and the little kid is very game.
