The fact is we have just too much grass. Having 2 laminitis prone horses and 10 acres of grazing doesn't compute....
This time of year they are confined to their pens..winter they will be wading in mud wishing they were in Dubai!
Forget sheep ... forget grass liveries. Maybe Christmas trees are an option.

Ideas on a postcard please.

Ride on mower?

Maybe I should consider a sheep riding a mower ....
Unfortunately hb6 fencing is not suitable for sheep and DEFRA rules are a nightmare.
Spyda , hubbie would love a ride on mower - but then so would the local lowlifes.
Thanks ...

Lexie - don't get me started on that one.
I would love more horses - but knowing our luck they would bring their own problems.
Working full time as well doesn't help.
Oh bother ....

we have exactly the same problem. the one with laminitis is on box rest, the one prone to laminitis is very carefully stripped grazed, my loan pony is cresty so on starvation patch for a bit, the ones not so prone to laminitis are just getting fat so therefore at risk and we have more fields that none of them can keep on top of. we do have a ride on mower but it broke caz theres just so much mowing to be done.

Thanks everybody.
We offered it up for hay ... for free ... but nobody is interested. They are all too busy with their own.
We have considered haylage ... we are based in Cambs, between Cambridge and Peterborough.
Does anyone know anyone reliable ... with a big R, who makes haylage in the area.

Oh sorry, I didnt realise sheep came wrapped in DEFRA red tape. Shame because I hear they are great with ride on mowers!

What about sytheing? Hard work I know.

Thanks hb6 ... I was thinking of something a little more leisurely than sytheing.
I recently strimmed the schooling area of 40 x 30m - nearly killed me. Meanwhile horses looked on bemused, as if to say 'whats the silly old bag doing that for? ... we could do a better job than that'.

I am having enough problems with 2 big horses and two fat ponies on 5 acres not so far away from you... I now have a ride on and mow like a mad person, I can't get anyone to make hay from it and yet come the winter I will be knee deep in mud and payng a fortune for hay, if you find anyone to make hay give me a shout !

We have 15 acres with 3 horses and two ponies. We have just made haylage AND have a ride on mower and STILL we have too much grass.....:)

what about some grass livery.
Earlier in the season i was having a panic as my grass had gone on strike and was refusing to grow. Now I've got loads too. 1 aged pony whos weight we have to watch and a fat gypsy cob who only as to breath the grass and he puts on a ton.
There must be some nice farmers about who might cut it for you.

Cant you just get it topped now and then let it grow so that you can strip graze it for the winter, thus less hay used and less mud created...... That what I do anyway
