I have been having confidence issues after being thrown from my horse after Christmas. Convinced myself it was down to cirmcumstances snow etc so have been taking it steady and getting proffessional help. All going well till yesterday when I had ridden for 30mins fine and was at a halt about to get off.

For no reason (seen by either my instructor or I) the horse totally bolted exploded into a bucking fit. I ran him into the fence and unfortunately I carried on out of the arena and over the fence! I am very happy to say I was wearing my back protector and although black and blue and very sore not majorly hurt. Every area of me except where the back protector was is in a big mess so it just shows even for schooling its not worth being without!

I never used to wear one at all for years and even took it off once before deciding to wear it yesterday. I won't be riding without it again..
 
Sorry about your accident, but I don't think back protectors are something you need to wear every day unless you know you are riding something dodgy or unknown. My TB mare is extremely polite and after 8 years of ownership has never given me cause to doubt my safety.
 
Sorry you got hurt! and hope you feel better soon.

I think a lot more people should wear them too. But at the end of the day it is personal preference, maybe one day it will be seen the same as wearing a hat??

I often wear mine, but not all the time, it really depends on what I am riding too be honest. I nearly always wear it to jump though
 
Oh Gaawwwd hope the bumps and bruises disappear quickly...

I wear a back protector too. Being a novice helps me to get my position right as well as giving me alot more confidence when riding my boy - something that alot of posters on here might want to think about.

Just don't think it's worth the risk going without TBH. Remember as we get well into spring there will be thousands of those nasty horse blood sucking cabbage white butterflies about...
 
It depends hugely on what you are doing, on the horse, and on how secure you are. I agree though, it's a good idea in a load of cases... Something like 48% of horse-riding related injuries requiring hospital treatment are head injuries, and the same %age is torso injuries.

it sounds as if there is something physically wrong with you horse though, pls get him properly checked out before you get hurt.
 
Oh no so sorry you've had another fall from him, especially when it sounded like he was starting to improve.......

Hope you aren't badly hurt and that you get things back on track soon.
 
Gentle hugs hun, and a hot choccy with all the trimmings.

I wear a BP or a Mountain Horse 'body armour' jacket, but then I expect that the Dizz and I may part company at ay given moment, although we have only actually done so twice and neither time was a fault or an issue, one was a slip and one was a silly fall. D1 always rides in her BP - I would love to be able to back off and let her ride BP-less and even hat-less as I did when I was younger, but I can't bear the risk

Ditto Kerrilli - sounds like there is something going on with your lad that needs investigating.
 
I always wear mine now - sometimes I feel like I am being a wimp for putting it on just to go round the block, but then I remember how much it hurts when I fall off, so it goes on!
 
I would wear one if

a) They make them that fir over 36J boobs
b) They make one that is actually comfroatable!

I used ot wear one for jumping at college and I fell off more wearing it than when I didn't. I have had 2 incidents jumping where if I was wearing a bp I would have come off, but because I wasn't I stayed on.

However...............If I was to do XC I would wear one - even if it meant being duck taped in to it. But since that is dangerous I dont do xc
 
My thoughts too. This is the second time this has happened in 8 weeks. Had full vetting before Christmas (5 stage) and has been having 5 weeks professional schooling in between so I think its not looking like behavior issues as the rest of the time its fine. He goes from totally calm and chilled to off on both occasions from standing with no apparent trigger?? Vet coming Mon to investigate just hope its nothing too serious....
