I know it's 'curtains' but...(laminitis abscess)

My vet suggested some horse boots from the states. They are called 'soft ride'. Has anyone had any experience of them? Is there anywhere I can buy them in this country? My girls easyboot trails really bruise her heels even with the gaiters I bought her.

Super news! That must be such a relief.

Winter is just around the corner so you will probably be able to extend the field time too. I'm one of the few people that find looking after horses in the winter much easier than any other time of the year thanks to my lami's

Thats good news and you are right, not having shoes on will not mask the signs of lami as being shod can do!:)

Well that is good news!
Vey pleased for you. : )

Thank you. Hopefully things are looking up. Though with my luck who knows. It's been such a rollercoaster ride with both my two this past three years.

Someone asked on their Facebook page if they were sold somewhere in UK, and got this answer from Soft-Ride Equine Comfort Boots: "Of course! we have a lot of happy horses in Soft Ride boots in the uK. We sell directly off our website, www.softrideboots.com and ship to using FedEx small packages."

I found this review about them http://www.horsetackreview.com/review-display/13376.html

A thread from the Chronicle of the Horse http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/showthread.php?307884-Soft-Ride-boots

A quote of a review, from this page http://www.equinewellnessmagazine.com/articles/therapeutic-hoof-boot-review/ :

"Soft-ride Boot 1. Were sizing and measuring instructions easy to understand? One tester said yes, one felt it might be challenging for the every day horse person and one had quite a bit of trouble. 2. Easy or hard to take measurements? Easy, but confusing because the smaller the number boot, the larger foot it fits. 3. How easy was it to put on initially? Very easy. 4. Did you see an increase in comfort? Yes. 5. Did this allow for more movement? Yes. “Horse was very comfortable.” 6. Durability? Very durable. 7. Was the padding adequate? Yes. 8. What did you like most about them? “The fit and the pads.” “ Well-made tough boot.” “Durable and easy to use.” “It was appropriately padded, the material was very breathable and there is a pad for all different situations.” 9. Were there any negatives? Very heavy. 10. Are they a good value for the cost? “Pretty good.” “Yes, more expensive but the quality is there.” “It is a very good product but extremely pricey.” 11. Would you refer these to others? Absolutely."

I know that your veterinarian recommended 'soft ride', but since I found this list over different brands of hoof boots, I thought that I might as well include it in my reply too:

Really good news the xrays were clear, one of mine had an abscess that went on for 4 months before finally resolving, the vet had suggested pts and at times I wondered whether I should have but while they are bright and fighting it is a hard call to make watching him move now I am happy that despite putting him through a lot of discomfort and at times pain it was the right decision.
Once you can ride her again you should find it easier to keep on top of her weight and the cushings will benefit from a more active lifestyle.

Thank you.

Thanks. Yes I am so pleased I did not PTS. She is staying sound at the moment with a dry poultice. I have had to swap her boots over for a canvas poultice boot as her heels are so sore. I can't wait to ride her again, but have to keep her hoof covered up until the abscess hole grows out. It is only around 12 mm up so maybe ten weeks or so? Though I could probably walk her round in her boots well before that. Fingers crossed.

Great news.

I was wondering if she is able to be walked out in hand yet? It might be the place to start if not already considered.

Don't know if these would help while poulticing and use her usual boots for when out and about? They are supplied with a pad but you could substitute for a more supportive one. After they were linked on here I got some and find they stay on really well but I would reinforce the base with duck tape or similar. Just a thought. http://www.equinepodiatrysupplies.co.uk/Boots/Hoof-Wraps-Hoof-Bandage

ps.Perhaps pad or cover her heels (socks?) to stop rubbing

Those wraps look great. I have ordered two of them. Thanks.

Why cant you pack the hole with a putty for hooves, i fear dry poultice will make her foot softer, i know a wet poultice will make it even softer, there is also a liquid that can be poured into the sole and sets and only comes out after 3 weeks, could give her protection on her soles for bruising etc whilst not changing her barefootedness

That sounds like a good idea. I will look into it. Thanks.

I think packing is a good suggestion. :) Look up Red horse hoof stuff on the wrap link I put up.

I have bought some Keratin hoof putty from viovet. They have lots of hoof boots on there very cheap too for anyone looking. Wish I had found them before as I would have saved over £10 per boot on my easyboot trails.

My boy who is now on the mend after a really nasty abscess, has a hoof wrap on, while the hoof grows back and it works really well to support and protect the foot!:)

That's good. I have ordered a couple of the wraps. I hope your boy continues to do well.
