I know its ridiculous but - cant decide what height pony/horse to buy?

Assuming redundancy/new job works out OK I am looking to get a new horse in a few months time. I know what I want - RC/BE Intro and PN schoolmaster type if possible - but I am really undecided about what height to buy

I am 5'2", and so far I have had:

17.1hh TB
14.3hh Welsh Section D
16.1hh ID x TB
15.2hh ISH (who was really a l/w cob)
16.2hh Selle Francais

Should I just look for the type of horse I want, for the price I want, and the height is more or less immaterial? I have an inclination for a smaller one again but not sure why - my last 16.2 was such a gentleman that his height was never an issue.

Quite like the RC schoolmaster here ---------> but it is too soon to buy one yet

I think you are looking at anything between 15.2 and 16.2 (we're the same height, and those were my considerations).

But realistically - the right horse for you could be any height - and I wouldn't be put off by going to see something that you thought may be too small or too big.
 
Hi I have had this issue.

Im 5"7 and I have a 16h mare. I am the right size for her, I could of got bigger but I dont enjoy riding larger horses. If I could get away with it I would of got a pony.

My mum has a 14.2 pony and I love riding her! She is alot of fun. My friend after riding her, said she felt like selling her 17h horse for a pony. I too big for this size, but honestly if I was your height without a shadow of a doubt I would be looking around the 15h mark. They are so much fun and easier and cheaper to keep.

Don't rule out anything between 14.2 and 16.2

I'm only a teenie bit taller than you and when I buy (only 9 months to go

) I'm going to be doing the same thing....you might find the perfect horse is 14.2 or 17hh
 
I would say to try anything that takes your fancy and see what you connect with. You never know you may surprise yourself.


Lauraheads - why do you say that at 5'7" you are too big for your mum's 14.2? I'm the same height and Ellie is a 14.2 Section D

However fate conspired against me and I went to see the perfect horse, who was 16.1.....but young....and grew, and grew and is now 16.3. It made it hard to learn to keep him together and working within his frame, but as you want a schoolmaster that won't be an issue really.

I have subsequently decided I was completely daft having height issues and would never have that as a criteria again when looking, as the right horse is the right horse, regardless of height or colour IMO.

I think that has been my experience - hence the varied heights etc of the horses I have owned - they were just always the right one for me!

I think I shall try and aim for 15.2hh (less far to fall when I come off

Well i'm 5ft4" and my pony is a Sec D and 14.3hh. Were are doing XC ODE and huntertrials. She is fab and beat a whole class full of horses bigger than her at our local Hunter trial winning the class.... We also wiped a few eyes at our last group XC lesson. i ended up giving the big guys leads over the jumps.
 
As long as you feel safe, comfortable and can hold the horse together than I wouldn't worry too much. I'm 5'4" and ride a 16.1hh (previously I had a 15.3hh so didn't think it was much of a jump), but I feel quite small on him as he rides more like 17hh!
