YES - many do with the right towing vehicle and single horse trailer

In my case they just sent me a new plate for it... I still have the original which says 1600kg gross

Contact trailer manufacturer first and then often they refer you to one of their dealers - cost = little or nothing

Nope

Downplating just restricts the amount the trailer can legally weigh when fully loaded

A trailer or anything else cannot be given a maximum weight above what it has been designed for but can be given a lower weight than its design weight

There are only a few reasons why a trailer would need to be downplated -
1/ to conform to B licence towing
2/ to keep the combination under a total of 3500 MAM for tacho if for business use
3/ to keep the combination under a total of 3500 MAM for hire and reward operator licence rules

If there was no plate, no serial number and no current manufacturer then it would go on the total of the tyre load ratings so ............. hmmmmm ......
