Do you think Pidge is worth? Don't worry I'm not selling him but just need to know for insurance purposes.

His breeding http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/diamond+minstrel
He's a registered ISH, 17hh just turned 11. Came from a hunt yard in Ireland. Good to shoe, vet, clip, box, safe on roads, etc Basically pretty good at everything your child could handle him

Makes 3' jumps seem easy though not with me on him

and loves his jumping

Flatwork is really coming on since getting the saddles sorted out in February and he goes really nicely at walk and trot and the canter on the bit is improving every day

so that's the good things - the bad things are he has mild hock spavin in his off hind which has totally fused and causes him no problems whatsoever, he's 100% sound even with flexion tests

he also has mild stringhalt in the same leg but again it causes him absolutely no problems whatsoever.
So bearing all this in mind what do you reckon he is worth? Only need to know for insurance purposes but have no idea on how much I would have to pay to get a reasonably well bred, safe sensible good allrounder

Umm, sorry can't put a value on him but why don't you insure him for what you bought him for?
Unless you are insuring for LOU, does the value count that much?
I thought if you were trying to insure for more than you bought for him you had to have a 5 stage vetting first.

Of course he will pass a vet.

Pratically every other Grade A showjumper, Advanced dressage horse, advanced eventer, top class racehorse has spavinned hocks. Bet you would find 101 other bone anamolies in there as well.

Unfortunately, once he has been 'labelled' as spavined then he will have considerably less value.

I would say £3k

Not all companies have a £3.5k value for insuring with no vetting - many have only £3k.

im with NFU and have a vet failure insured for £3,500.
So i know they do it!

I know most companies are 3k - i was lucky enough to be with NFU already when i brought the horse!

My vet said that my mare who had spavins (and surgery, so is 100% sound) would never pass a vetting having had it.

But would agree, 3.5 - 4 ish for insurance only. If you were selling him, much less (I would have to basically give Alice away!) She is only insured for 1600, as that is what I bought her for, and think thats more than I would get if I sold her anyway!

thanks for the replies, nice to know he is worth something even with the hock spavin

Just interested as to why some people think he wouldn't pass a vetting with his hock spavin as he is 100% sound even after flexion tests?
And just for the hell of it if he didn't have the spavin how much would he be worth?
